The Landmaster... The answer to the MM300 we currently crave?

Post by sierra11b » Mon Sep 04, 2017 11:44 am

Just browsing the latest Fieldmaster thread and can't help but think the entire line was misguided in the Tuna case, and especially with these recent cheaper Solar offerings. The ugly duckling with no real direction... At least that's been my thought over the years. YMMV.

Some of the Landmasters over the years, however, have been pretty damn cool, almost in an early Anonimo San Marco way in design quirkiness -- never owned one but still browse occasionally. I've always though the Landmaster line is the modern answer to what we've all wanted with the MM300 seeing how they refuse to alter that crown jewel. It could be a great Prospex interpretation of what the SBGE001/015 is to the GS line. Imagine it.

If they were able to downsize it to a 40-42mm model in Ti, and with 200m WR, like the SBGE virtually is as a GS/GMT dive watch, they could redefine the line with a grand slam which coincides with the SBDX017.

They'd need to ditch the SBDB015. As cool as the watch is based on the testament of it's owners, it's sort of an overpriced and oversized ugly duckling too, and lacks the compass bezel.

Seiko agrees which is even more confusing:
11.The All-Conquering Landmaster Series

One of the most sought-after exhibits at the Seiko Museum in Tokyo is the stunning Landmaster series of limited edition sportswatches. Like F1 racers, these timepieces are test-beds of cutting-edge technology that must perform perfectly because human lives are often at stake.

Just look at some of these beauties... If they could offer a non-kinetic reinterpritation of these with the Spring Drive 5R66 or unrefined mechanical GS GMT base with clean compass or dual time bezel (which belongs with the Landmaster), and offer it in 40-41mm case, I think it would be a real winner...

I really miss the one I had. I haven't been able too find another one for a reasonable price so I gave up a few months back. When you do find them they are as much or more than MSRP and rarely mint. The pictures aren't the best quality since I must have taken them more than 5 years ago on a phone. Likely a Galaxy S3.

Love it.

Like I said... Busy but still works like the early Anonimo Firenze.

Although given the lack of participation with this thread maybe we're alone?

I still think a tasteful combination of the SBDB015 and the most recent line of Landmasters could yield a particular niche top-selling watch, so long as the size is right, which seems a long shot with modern Seiko these days. :banghead:

Kinetics always owned me more than i owned them. Keeping a charge on em was a PITA sometimes. The DD movts were an improvement but still not ideal

I do like those Landmasters, tho. I'd rock any pictured here so far

I like the GMT hand but agree the hour and minute hand are lacking.

There was another option which was a lot cheaper but still nice, the Alpinist SARB059. Not a Land Master but nice watch inspired to similar idea.
