Giugiaro Prospex Diver

Post by dnslater » Mon Apr 24, 2017 7:34 am

Saw this reissue announced today. I admit that I'm intrigued by the look. A bit of a Ploprof type unorthodox style fun summer watch. Quartz tuna style movement and sapphire crystal.

So weird... but I kinda like it. Nice to see something different now and again. Probably very comfortable - like to see some wrist shots.

I like that orange dial version.

Put some different hands on it and I would love it. It would avoid my stupid wrist bone.

These two, ever so slightly off-the-wall Prospex Divers come courtesy of the design studios of Italian supercar designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro who is responsible for all sorts of very cool reimagined objects from Nikon camera cases to furniture.

Their wacky-looking cases are made from Stainless steel and plastic like any good Propsex Diver; however their shroudings have been given a funky Lego-like surface that wraps around the entire right hand side of their cases and extends to the left side and down toward the right lugs.

They measures 43.8mm in diameter with a lug-lug measurement of 48mm and a height of 11.2mm. They are fitted with a domed Sapphire crystal, divers bezels and screw-down crowns and case-backs with engraved LE numbers.

Further divers features include: anti-magnetic resistance, water-resistance to 200 meters and hands and markers with Seiko LumiBrite. The Blue Edition looks like it might have a DiaShield coating while the Gold Edition has an IP coating.

Powering these two unusual suspects are Seiko Quartz 7N36 calibers which have an accuracy of 15 seconds per month.

Info I stole from WUS

Even though I've long been a fan of Guigiaro's work the asymmetric case leaves me cold. Still, I'd be hard pressed to think that they didn't think every detail through.

The oddity is that it has the left handed crown, but the design would make it impossible to wear comfortably on your right hand. Actually probably very comfortable on the left hand.

I'm sure it works overall. One downside I can see is having to hike your sleeve cuff up to read it.

As much as I don't want to like it... I really like the blue. Looks like a perfect beach n pool watch.

When these hit the secondary market, I'll probably get one...

Wait these use the Tuna movement?
I misspoke. 7n36 as it turns out is a cheaper version and not as nice as Tuna's 7c46

I kind of like it. I wonder what size and type of lug attachment it has.
