Seiko's Seiko 5 SSA285K1 "Diastar"

Post by AtomicTom » Mon Feb 27, 2017 10:17 am

Have you guys had time to check out the Seiko 5 "Diastar" SSA285K1?

Seeing it just today over at Worn & Wound actually.

With just a few details including a modern/vintage 44.75mm x 47.8 barrel-shaped case, cream dial
with green accents, and LumiBrite hands, and markers. Then in addition, you have a Hardlex crystal,
100 meter water resistance, Seiko 4R37 automatic movement, and nice nylon strap.

Here is a look...

Ditto Hoppy !

Actually thought it was a look, or review of a vintage Seiko at first. Really looks like
they did a nice job with it, and the NATO is a neat touch also.

Love some vintage (looking) Seiko, I could do this, hopefully they'll be a blue or yellow. Would look nice next to my 6139s.

Damn them! Without the "5 Sports" logo, these would be far more loved.

I like the 5 logo.

Either that guy has massive wrists or the strap is short. I'd like it to tuck.

I was going to make a disaster joke, but I kinda like that one. Now it makes even less sense that their better made watches are often either ugly or boring beyond belief.

There is some history behind the "Seiko 5" name;

Whoa James, you are psychic sir !!! :o Looks like they do make a yellow, with black version in the SSA289K1, and then
a red, and black model in the SSA287K1...

I wish it was 2 mm smaller, but it's a cool look.

Thanks for posting up about it Tom :)

It'll wear similar to a NAFT, maybe a little better with flatter case back.

Thanks, I appreciate the history, it is just the design snob in me that doesn't like it. Reminds me of those 80's GM sedans with the big "Sport" stickers on them. My own hangups perhaps.

They were around for pretty cheap at one stage ($160-$190ish) from memory. I posted a quick thread a while back when they caught my eye:
viewtopic.php?f=70&t=54369&p=1094622&hi ... 1#p1094622

They were available at creationwatches and a few Aus and NZ online shops but all seem out of stock:

There is a couple on ebay, but for more $$ now

Or A$270 on bracelet but it looks completely different on the bracelet.
The nato helps make this watch.
One is from Italy the other within Australia

Not just you. That and the "X" logo ruin many otherwise nicely designed Seikos.
