Ultimate Seiko SKX

Post by dnslater » Fri Feb 24, 2017 12:07 pm

I have never been a huge fan of Seiko SKX mods as they generally screw up the classic proportions of the watch. After getting an SKX175 Pepsi recently I realized again how much I love these watches. The SKX175 will stay stock, but I decided to try my hand again at "improving" an SKX, with the help of Duarte at NEWW. I saw that Yobokies has new Tuna style bezels that fit the SKX case, which is what inspired me to do a build as it is unique. The watch started life as an SKX171. We did the following mods:

-NH35a hacking/handwinding movement
-Signed crown compatible with new movement
-Domed sapphire
-Ti Samurai hands
-Tuna style bezel (from Harold)
-Lumed sapphire bezel insert (Duarte now has these)
-Strapcode Super Oyster

Watch achieved the unique look that I wanted. Sort of a Seiko version of a Seadweller, but make the watch look like it could have came off a Seiko production line. Realize I have way to much $$ sunk into this mod and could never recoupe half of it, but it is pressure tested and ready to go into permanent beater duty.

That looks fantastic!

How much are you into the project?

The only think I could add would be drilled lugs and there is a guy doing it.

About the price of a lightly used Shogun

I'm very happy with it though and love the SKX case size. Yeah, drilled lugs would be awesome, but I think I am done.

Very sweet!

I picked up a SARB059 dial, and I'm trying to decide if it gets built into an SRP or SKX case.

I tried to find a SARB059 to use as starting point as I like the dial/hand combo, the bracelet is nice and they have a 6r15, but you can't really find them anymore. Not even on ebay.

I know, right. The prices on them are way up there too, so when I saw a dial on recon I snapped it up. I figure I'll drop about the same as a new SARB059 to get what I want, but at least I won't have the urge swap the bezel and chapter ring.

Very nice Nick. I had a PMMM mod that, except for the bezel, was very similar:

Now I've been thinking about doing something similar to a SKX009, does anyone knows if Seiko ever produced a SKX blue dial but with applied markers?

Artifice Horoworks sells an SKX009 with a bunch of upgrades and a SRP493 Stargate sunburst dial. Bet you could source one from Rob or someone.

I'm normally anti-mod, but your watch and this one look great.

Edit: Damn, I just looked at the price of the Artifice Horoworks one. :o

Great work. I especially like the bezel. Is it unidirectional or is it like a Murphey?

It clicks and is unidirectional just like the stock bezel. The rubber bezel gasket wouldn't fit so it isn't dampened so the bezel feel isn't as good as stock. Duarte said he could order a thinner gasket but I didn't want to wait. Maybe later.

Really nice mod. I should have bought a 171 last time I saw a good deal. That dial is really nice.
