Seiko 6R15 balance issues
Check this video out from Spencer Klein. Pretty crazy considering I had some watches in with this issue.

Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
The video isn't showing in Tapatalk if you posted it, but this is the same one I likely saw a while back when I was asking you about 6R15s. Crazy stuff as he made it sound like a regular seen problem.
Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
Yep, video works on the site. I didn't see this video before. There's a fix! I was actually talking about Spencer today. A guy at work wanted to get his 007 fixed instead of buying a new one and he was my first thought. I'm not sure if his is a C movement, but his just quit working.

Can't even see the video from Tapatalk, and accessing it directly on the site, at last through my phone, it won't even open.
.....never mind.

Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
I did some searching and I'm coming up empty. What's the best way to get in contact with Spencer?
Seiko 6R15 balance issues
My watchmaker told me all 6R15s suffer from one issue some way or another. They all came that way from the factory (balance wheel, over oiled, under oiled, etc). After owning 5 watches with the same movement, I'd agree
Many will register, few will last

Spencer posted this info on reddit:
The "C" type balances used in the 4R and 6R movements are fatally flawed. You can retrofit a complete "A" assembly - balance, balance bridge, diashock, etc - and I have seen this make immediate improvements.

Unless I missed it, he never explains what the issue is, just that there is an issue.

Would that even be a worthwhile and cost effective switch out?toxicavenger wrote: ↑Sat Feb 11, 2017 7:50 pmSpencer posted this info on reddit:

Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
My buddy checked with him for a movement issue with his 7S26. It was going to be more cost effective by a fairly large margin to just buy a new SKX007.
With the Seikos I've had most must have been pre C balances other than the SARX and one of my Sumos. The SARX was overall pretty accurate but very sensitive off full wind.

Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
So current cheap seiko autos are crap? Is that the takeaway?
Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
Unfortunately yes, I think that may be the case.
Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
Shame.
Spencer word is Seiko gospel. I won't be touching any new Seiko 4R or 6R with the C balance now.
He helped me vet my 6139 and told me which parts to horde in order keep it running an additional lifetime because the movement has a flaw if you aren't running the chrono continuously. Now I have two complete 6139B movements and a rare NOS sealed center chrono wheel worth about $100. He didn't need to give me that info because he's always searching himself.

Save me some reading -
When did the "c" balance come into play?

Re: Seiko 6R15 balance issues
Huh. Back to solar/quartz I guess.
But seriously, I wonder what the percentage is when it comes to iffy Seiko movements. I have an 007 built in 2016 that runs about consistently -10 a day - which is fine by me.
Then again, I picked a pre-owned late model Monster last year that ran horribly. Even Fred Amos couldn't tame it.
