I've owned a couple BB's and this is a next level watch.the_natural wrote:The Black Bay comes to mind (of course), though I was never a big fan and I think the SLA looks way better. But, that's me. And if you want a nice bracelet you'd be better served by the BB.

Is it too soon to say this is my favorite watch ever?

I just picked up another 114060 Sub. I'm not joking when I say this Seiko is close.
The finishing isn't quite there, neither is the movement. The "look" is great, the feel is 90% there. All in all she's priced well.

Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
Can you elaborate on this? I'm genuinely interested. As someone in his first year of real watch ownership, I think I lack the ability to notice a lot of the subtle differences. Also as someone who currently owns a 214270 Explorer, I'm wondering what I'm missing when I look at that and then the SLA and fail to see much of a quality/finishing difference ... though I guess you did say the gap in your opinion between the SLA and the SubC anyway, was only about 10%, so that's hardly a stark, night-and-day difference.

Congrats on the Sub . They always draw me back, too.hoppyjr wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2017 7:31 pmNope.jswing wrote:Is it too soon to say this is my favorite watch ever?

Buy a loupe or a macro lens for a camera and take a look. You have eyes.the_natural wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 6:00 amCan you elaborate on this? I'm genuinely interested. Interesting. I didn't even think that inherent in his comment was the assumption that he was looking at it on that level. Makes sense I guess.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 6:24 amBuy a loupe or a macro lens for a camera and take a look. You have eyes.

I have no idea if he is. However, if you can't tell the difference at that level why do you care what he thinks?the_natural wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 6:32 amInteresting. I'm not saying I care what he thinks in the context you're referring to; I'm saying I'm interested in seeing what he's seeing that makes him say what he did, especially since I have access to both a modern 6-digit Rolex and the SLA.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 6:49 amI have no idea if he is. And I'm saying "see for yourself". WUS is a spoon feeding forum. If you can't see a difference in the sharpness of the transition from brushed to polished, or the smoothness of lume application just roll with it. Your life as a watch guy will be much more enjoyable.
In any case, the apparent quality of a watch isn't a great indicator of it's long term quality. I don't think you can accurately gauge the quality of a watch unless you've owned for a few years (assuming irregular wear).

Ultimately I didn't pose the question to you, and this is starting to feel a bit onerous, so with all due respect just forget I asked. I'll go elsewhere for my "spoon-feeding."JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 7:05 amAnd I'm saying "see for yourself". WUS is a spoon feeding forum. Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
It took me a long time to see what people meant "finished well". The best thing I can recommend is take a cheap Seiko SKXxxx and compare it to a newer Rolex or Omega... then you'll see big differences in dial quality, alignment, case finish, hand design and finish... I know when I first got a 2500 PO the dial and hands really struck me as well finished and really good quality.

Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
will be interesting to see if someone got both SLA and Budget MAS to compare their quality, finishing etc. Obviously minus the movement. 3500$ vs $600.
Edit: I think it would be more intriguing comparison than vs Rolex

Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
I got that message, even if the underlying assumption seemed to clearly be that I would only care if someone else cared. I get it, there's a lot of precedent for that. But my goal was understanding, so I could thereby learn by trying to see it for myself, and that was repeatedly dismissed.
The "if you can't see it why care" logic is as flawed as the logic whereby I only care about a watch if someone else also does. It also doesn't foster a deeper understanding or appreciation. But, lesson learned. Each site has its own rules, overt or otherwise, and I found a perimeter edge this morning.
I'll keep this in-mind, thanks.Seppia wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2017 7:29 amDon't be sensitive, in this forum people give and take opinions with a bit more force than on other forums, and nobody complains*.

Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
I agree. Between the new 051/053 seems like an obvious comparison, but also against a GS and the MM300 would be interesting imo. I really want to see an MM300 in-person one of these days...
Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
May as well compare the Budget MAS to a Grand Seiko. We already know that Seiko brings good value in pieces like the Sumo, Shogun, and Tuna so I would expect the same with Budget MAS.Panerai7 wrote:will be interesting to see if someone got both SLA and Budget MAS to compare their quality, finishing etc. Obviously minus the movement. 3500$ vs $600.

There are many factors that make the SLA017 special; hand built by GS studio, decorated & regulated movement, finishing, dial, bezel, and its ties with the original Seiko diver. The 017 isn't for everyone and surely wasn't intended to be.

Re: 62MAS-Inspired Seiko Dive Watch
My old ass eyes can't really differentiate the finish quality of the Seiko vs Rolex all that well. The difference isn't that great to me, and I honestly don't care enough to break out my loupe, which can only lead to disapointment in my experience. There are certainly differences, like the Rolex bracelet is much better (although in fairness I haven't even tried the Seiko bracelet on), and the Rolex bezel action may be somewhat smoother. The Rolex movement may also be a little smoother, but my Seiko is running +2 seconds a day, so accuracy-wise they're similar. I love both the Seiko and the Sub. I find the Seiko a bit more interesting, particularly the dial and crystal, but that could be in part because I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the Seiko. I also can't help but factor in value, and having bought my SBDX019 for $2500 vs $6000 for my last Sub, I think the disparity in price is bigger than the disparity in quality, if that makes sense.
