Recs on service--Stripped crown threads-SKX007

Post by dukerules » Mon Nov 07, 2016 3:14 pm

My son's SKX007 crown will no longer screw down. I'm assuming he's stripped the threads. Apart from COSERV, is there anywhere else you guys would recommend sending it for service?

So based on my reading, it looks like this may need to be a case swap. Probably better off with a brand new watch.

First if it was me I would pull the crown all the way out, then run some waxed dental floss around the threads on it (I bought a SKX that I was told had a stripped tube, it wasn't, it was just dirty). After that put a little grease (or booty lube) on the threads and give it a go. The threads might be full of dirt.

If this all doesn't work I would ping Duarte, he might have some parts on hand for it. Hopefully it is just dirty, or maybe the crown is stripped. The case is a one piece version on them, so if it is a tube you need a new case or someone to convert it to trip-lock.

How adept are you at taking the movement out? Might have stripped the threads in the crown as apposed to the tube? That would be a pretty easy swap..

Never mind.. Terry is quicker on the trigger..

Thanks, guys. It happened today after he set the time back an hour, so I'm sure something is stripped. No luck cleaning and greasing the threads. I'll hit up Duarte.

Generally the crown threads strip before the case tube. Do you have another 7S26-0020 crown that you can try on your son's case?

I don't. Duarte has been responsive, and I'll likely send it to him. Hoping it's just the crown threads.

I was was always told that a bum crown on an SKX or 6309 means it'd trashed. New case.

Trade it to Carlo for a better SKX. Don't trash it.

He mentioned in another thread it was a full case replacement from Seiko.

Yep, case had to be replaced. Took a while for Duarte to get the replacement case from Seiko, but it's back on my son's wrist.

$10 to transfer the movement into the new case. Beyond reasonable.

How much for the new case?

I think $110. So for a little more, I could've had a new watch, but as this was my son's first real watch, I wanted to keep some of the old one in it.

That's cool. When it comes to maintaining sentimental watches, I've also made decisions more from the heart than the head.
