My First MM 300
Hello Seiko nuts,
I picked up my first MM300 a few weeks ago. I was a bit ambivalent on it. The bracelet did not fit properly and the set up was the hated pin and collar. While I do dig the rubber strap it gets too damn hot down here to wear rubber straps a lot. Honestly, at first I was doubting that I would keep it.
I put the watch on Drew Canvas and it took on a bit of new life. It was very comfortable and instantly wearable. I switched it over to OEM rubber and I liked it a bit more, but it still had long term drawbacks. Plus, the 6105 is a favorite and I always wear it on rubber.
The watch has a bit of cool bling to it so I needed the bracelet to work out. My buddy Peter, aka gr8sw, sent me a link to a short series of easy to understand photos of how to properly remove the pins and collars and then reset them. As a quick aside, my Speedy pro had the same pin and collar set up; many really nice bracelets have this system as well, but I have never learned how to deal with them. I always let a jeweler do that, and that is a pain in the ass. I took the instructions Peter sent and I got to work. It took some serious doing at first, and some patience, but I got it done. In fact, once I learned how to do it it was not all that difficult. I tried as hard as possible not to lose one of those f'ing tiny ass collars, but one shot off on the floor and was lost for good... that is until my eagle eyed wife, who promised me she could indeed find it... found it. If you have never seen one of those collars, well... they are TINY.
I have to say... the pin and collar set up does one thing really well... it adds a bit more touch of finish to the bracelet links. Clearly, this is why this set up is used on some finer watch bracelets. You do not see a screw or hex head and that does improve the overall look. The MM300 seems to be a very versatile watch, appropriate for just about any situation. It looks great with dress clothes making sales calls and it is obviously tough enough to handle any situation in the wild outdoors.
The current Seiko group:
Still need a proper waffle style strap for the 6105. If someone has one to sell, please hit me up.
This is such a cool watch.
And the one that has been through thick and thin and always prevails... Compared to newer Tunas, this one is practically vintage.

i agree in that i can't stand pin and collar stuff....seems dumb when screws work just fine and way easier to deal with...

And my reply to your MM300 and the fact that you were able to adjust the bracelet to your liking is:
It also looks very good on the Drew canvas

Pins and collars are not so difficult to work with (yes, it sucks when a collar goes flying to the nether), but once is adjusted to your wrist, you're done. No need to worry about screws unscrewing or having to use loctite.

Re: My First MM 300
Nice TR. One issue I have seen with MM's is people tend to lose the stock spring bars and put aftermarket 20mm versions in them. Well this let's the endlinks move around and not fit really tight. But I guess I was lucky because my old one fit great.
I will still own another one some day but the Aegir has wiped out all thoughts of a new watch since I have owned it.

Re: My First MM 300
The MM stock spring bars rock. They somehow make the endlinks far more easy to get off and back on the watch than any other watch I have ever had. That makes me enjoy the watch a lot more because I can more easily put it on strap or steel.toxicavenger wrote:Nice TR. Terry, one day I really want to try out an Aegir. Killer looking watches.

Nice T.R. I didn't know you hadn't had the MM? You should give it a try on a heavy duty nato.

Re: My First MM 300
Interesting thought, Kelly. I was thinking on getting a leather nato/zulu. But the lugs are 20mm and I'm wondering if it will look like a tiny ribbon compared to the watch.kfalk wrote:Nice T.R. I didn't know you hadn't had the MM? You should give it a try on a heavy duty nato.

Do it now. $1802 on sale from Seiya. Mine came in a couple days ago and it's a keeper this time.dukerules wrote:Love your Seiko collection. And one day I'll own an MM300.
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.
Re: My First MM 300
Of course I'd prefer 22mm lugs, but I don't think it looks too bad? So nice for summer.T.R. wrote:Interesting thought, Kelly. I was thinking on getting a leather nato/zulu. Re: My First MM 300
Great watch. Fantastic "one watch" candidate.

I'm always surprised at how nice the MM looks on the canvas.

I have to agree.Nomadz wrote:Great watch. Fantastic "one watch" candidate.
While I would not attempt to compare this watch to a Rolex Submariner, likely the best "one watch" candidate out there, I do think that this would be a great "one watch" for a dive watch lover who might occasionally need a dressier piece.

Re: My First MM 300
I agree here, also. I did not think it would work. But it did, and nicely. My wife liked the canvas option better than the rubber or the bracelet, and she knows her shit. Willy gave the nod to the canvas as well.CGSshorty wrote:I'm always surprised at how nice the MM looks on the canvas.

Yes, it could do quite nicely.Nomadz wrote:Great watch. Fantastic "one watch" candidate.
If my Sinn left the nest I'd aim for a MM. Again.
Re: My First MM 300
The caseback/monocoque case doesn't get mentioned much. To me, that's one of the best casebacks ever.
