The Bishop Redux

Post by sharkfin » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:56 pm

Hey guys, its been a while since I had incoming. :)

So what do we have here? The Bishop Redux.
Some of Seiko's latest old skool chrono reissue in multiple flavours.
All of which were released as JDM limited editions and sold out in record time.
Many may refer these as "The Bishop" from the movie Alien during which the character -Bishop, wears this model in the classic movie.

I got the original Bishop brand new during middle school, and saved up my paper route $$$ for my first Seiko Chrono.
I've always been interested in the offset style, but then again, I like weird stuff I guess. Its either a love it/hate it piece.

There were about 6 variants to this reissue. Different colours, SS brushed or hardened black coated SS bracelets.
Link to Seiko's website to see the line up.
http://www.seiko-watch.co.jp/spirit/giugiaro/

Below is the SCED011 variant. One of 200 LE only sold in Japan, land of the rising sun.
The mov't is a 7T12 quartz chronograph.
Waterproof 10 ATM.
Mineral Glass.

The original Bishop -SBHQ017 aka Bishop specs.
Seiko 7A28-6000 quartz chronograph.
Waterproof 10 ATM.
Mineral Glass.

There's a few differences I've noticed right away.
The (Blue Bishop II) SCED011 is thicker or taller than the original.
It also has a date placed withing the right side sub dial.
All buttons on the right side of case. Two pushers and crown at 3.
The original Bishop has three pushers and a crown at 8. The three pushers at 2,4,10.
Clasps are different, but the bracelet looks very similar to each other.
The new Bishop has friction bi-directional bezel, where as the origina Bishop uses click ball bi-directional bezel.

I really dig these, and this one holds some nostalgia for me and my youth.
For many years, I didn't realize how the Bishop was such a cult classic. It just adds to its cool factor now.

Another cool fun fact is the Bishop was one of many designs by famed designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
This guy has designed all kinds, most notably, cars, motorcycles, firearms, cameras, watches...

Some cool reads about the master designer. This man designed some cool shit! :fro:

I tried to collect all the flavours, but its a small feat to even catch this blue variant let alone all. I guess it leaves me a goal to chase in the distant future. hehe.
I would've loved to get one of the brushed SS variants. They do look pretty slick.

So here ya have it, another one of Seiko's head scratching limited edition reissues.
I'm awaiting the 6105 reissue, any day now Seiko. lol ;)

Enjoy. D.

That is very cool Dave. I like the one with green pushers.

Interesting head offset. I like the dial. They should get Guigiaro Design to do more for them.
only accurate watches are interesting

Love it. Thanks Dave. Wish I had known about this before they sold out. No doubt prices will inflate quickly.

That is really cool. How difficult is it to find originals?

The original Bishops has a cult following. They will scoop up any at a good deal.
I've seen a one or two on ebay priced around $600-1000.

But now with the reissues, those lucky few got reissues at a fraction of the price.
Not sure if it'll affect pricing of those originals, but the reissues are going up already.

Thanks guys, these are usually a hit/miss with many.
Glad you guys are kind enough to agree with me that they're kinda cool. hehe.
I like nerdy things. :ugeek:

cheers, D.

Like Sharkfin, I love my Bishop v. SEIKO.

I no longer wear a watch and do not collect stuff so it is for sale if anyone has or knows of someone interested it is in very good used condition. This watch almost always received comments when I did wear one. Questions eMail or go to eBay

I am not a diver but certainly a fan of Jill Heinerth.

Well, I could put a bunch of stuff up that isn't of value like too many sites or look and learn from experts. That is my intention. Oh, aside from selling my Seiko is to purchase a buy it once mask, snorkel & fullfootfins that I can travel with.

I look at some of the posts on this thread and question the purpose and for that matter why am I responding to your post… I guess you need some qualification on why I am on the site. Well now you have got it.

Q. How many of you people knew who Jill was and know about her dive into the largest iceberg known to man at the time and her 3 hour struggle to resurface from the back flow?

So once again posting isn't important it is the value, I hope I can bring value in the future.

ciao

Slash,

The problem I see is that your first post on this BBS is an eBay link to your auction.

That's what I was referring to. Looked to be an opportunity. Please feel free to mingle.
