Just bought a WW2 Australian Navy deck clock

Post by River Rat » Wed Jul 26, 2023 9:50 am

Just got this off Ebay. A WW2 Sestrel Deck clock from the HMAS Australia a cruiser that saw a lot of action and survived WW2.

A little info of the ship.

Hope I did OK on this. But the date of the clock and Setrel did sale stuff to the royal navy I think it's legit. Was reading about this this ship during a kamikaze attack the captain was killed. Being from his cabin really makes you think about the sacrifices the greatest generation did. My dad was lucky to have survived a Kamikaze attack on the USS Bunker Hill he escaped the fire by jumping onto a catwalk along the flight deck.

First ever 2-day shipping from England off eBay ever. Ordered it on Wednesday got it on Friday. Never got that with a watch that weighs less from Europe.

On the wall keeps great time.

Better photo of a maintenance mark, I think.
Better link below on info on the HMAS Australia.

Nothing like history on the wall. This was the first ship to get attack by suicide Kamikaze aircraft and got attack many more time and survived it lost 87 of its crew due to those attacks. My dad never forgot his ship the USS Bunker Hill getting attacked by Kamikaze aircraft.

Some photos of the movement.

Has an Elliott movement that was used in a lot of military clocks made for the British military. Has an interesting dust cover over the regulator. Looks to have been serviced recently.

This is why I collect military issued timepieces. It's like history on the wall or your wrist. Like this clock being from the HMAS Australia and being from the captain's cabin from around 1942. One of their captains was tragically killed during a kamikaze attack so this could be something he looked at to be on time during his duties. Did contact the Australian Navy and their war museum to see if it's legit. Was thinking when I get too old for this hobby years down the road donating it to one of those museums since it's Australian history plus my dad's mom from Australia. Still have not heard back any info yet. Would be cool if they had a photo of the cabin with this clock in it. Was looking at items the Australian war museum had from there web site they did have a clock key from the HMAS Australia.
