Two Special Quartz Divers

Post by seiko_shepherd » Wed Nov 21, 2018 9:44 am

Recently I was talking to a friend of mine about his impending retirement and plans he had to thin his watch collection beforehand. He sent me a list of watches he planned to sell and before doing so offered me any opportunity to buy a few.

A 7548-700b and 7548-7009 both on OEM z199’s were on said list.

We conversed a bit more and he revealed that both of these watches were serviced and one of them originally owned by none other than the Seiko Guru himself, Spencer Klein. Who I might add I hold in high esteem for obvious reasons and a few other not so obvious ones. I digress.

Additionally, my friend had the documentation to prove both of these watches were on Spencer’s bench and or in his possession at one time to boot.

I snapped them up without second thought. I’m truly grateful and honored to add these to my collection. To own a pair of watches that were tuned up and once owned by one of your hero’s and someone else you call friend is a blessing to say the least. They will both be in my possession the first of next week once he returns home from a 3 day work related meeting and is able to ship.

So, without further ado...

Why would a watch owned by Spencer make it special? I bought watches off of him before. Guess I should have kept them.

Here’s a few that are now with other DWC members now:

Apologize for the Seiko ignorance, who is Spencer Klein?

Spencer has invested a large portion of his watch enthusiasm in restoring old Seikos. I’ve emailed him once to vet the pogue I was about to purchase from a private seller and he also tipped me on what parts to buy for the movement. He did so even though he’s constantly looking for the parts himself.

Good guy with a lot of knowledge. The only premium which should be associated with his watches is that 1) you can essentially guarantee it’s as original as possible, and 2) it's likely in good working order unless he never got around to cracking the hood.

Nice watches nonetheless.

Just FYI, Todd has asked me to close his account at DWC.

The OP.
I don’t think he cared for the usual DWC vibe

I don’t get it. I wasn’t mean... just needed some explanation on the whole “my watches were touched by Spencer so they are extra special” thing.

I mean, there is nothing like a vintage Seiko that has been worked on by someone who knows their shit. But I just don’t place those Seiko watch tinkerers up there with Jesus.

I had no idea who Spencer Klein was. I guess he is the John Lingenfelter of Seiko repair. But then again lots of people don’t know the name Lingenfelter.

Don’t get butt-hurt. Just shrug and move on.

I don’t think anyone said anything terrible, but he took it as disrespectful, I guess. I don’t argue with people who don’t want to be here.
He seems like a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Seiko guy, so I’m a little disappointed he left. Probably for the best, though.

Sucks

I bet he doesn’t realize I’m a longtime member of SCWF

But I do remember his wruw wearing post

They are very... in depth. And almost like he expected praise. We like Seiko here but DWC doesn’t care about Seiko like SCWF. Someone please get ahold of him and tell him we care, and to let us know his feelings. Cause it’s 2018.

Some guys hold other people up on a totem pole and will pay crazy prices forkj. those guys to touch their watches. I am not one of them. I do believe Spencer is a excellent watch guy though. I also believe Jack at IWW was/is also, but for some reason or another his name didn't pull crazy prices on watches due to his association like Spencer does.

I would agree the OP sounded a bit overly enthusiastic.
I’ve never heard of any watch having enhanced value due to its ownership history unless it was owned by a bona fide celebrity or historical figure. Certainly not because a particular person serviced it.

That said, they’re cool watches. Sorry the OP felt unwelcome.

IMO, dude was excited and proud of his incoming watches. Not sure about the whole "Seiko Guru himself, Spencer Klein" thing though. Maybe he figured you pissed in his Cheerios, but hell, HTFU.

That’s exactly what it was. I think he figured everyone would be as excited about it as he was. If he thought this was bad, he was definitely right to leave. We’re not everyone’s cup of tea.
