Picked up this old thing today ....

Post by slashd0t » Thu Jun 02, 2016 9:24 pm

1972 Rolex 5513... Bought from the original owner who literally kept everything including the original receipt (he paid $178 for it) and all of the service work over the last 40ish years. He said he wore this every day for the last 40 years and was an avid diver in the early 70's, which is why he bought it. Had a great lunch with him today as he shared his life stories with this piece.

That's amazing!

Did he say what made him want to sell it?

That's a great pick up and how cool to have it from the original owner who used like the tool watch it was designed to be.

Congrats on the great addition to you collection.

He just didn't wear it anymore.. He said for the last couple years he just had little desire to wear a watch anymore.. He had it serviced by Rolex back in 2012 because he wanted to take up diving again .. Pretty awesome he told Rolex not to change out the hands/dial etc.

Local classified ads! He responded to my WTB ad for a Rolex 5513 ... Can't believe that actually worked!

Amazing find and story behind it.

I have always wanted to pick up a piece like this from the original owner in a non-traditional way. I never thought of local classified ads.

I am not asking for the actual sale price but how was the price arrived at? Did the seller have an idea of current value? Is the deal you got as amazing as the watch itself?
Regards
Barry

He did a bit of research to find out roughly what it was worth and asked me to offer him a fair price. I think I paid him a fair price for it.

This. Is. Awesome. Seriously, I can't believe you scored that with a WTB in local classifieds! I would have never thought of that. I bet he had some great stories, too. This will be a nominee for watch find of the year.

Outstanding. I once tried to buy a beat to hell 6309 off of a drunken fisherman at the beer store. He got weirded out and told me to get bent.

So cool. I think I'd break my "no more no date watches" rule for this one.
