Bulova Sea Hunter 1000m

Post by Steve O. » Sat May 16, 2015 10:11 am

I've always found dive watches without rotating bezels interesting, but with the exception of an Ennebi Fondale that I had for a while, I've never really considered pursuing one. When I came across this vintage Bulova Sea Hunter (c. early 1970's), I thought how cool is that? A simple, no nonsense tool diver, and check out that domed crystal! There's not a lot of info out there about these, other than it shares the same case as some other contemporary divers such as Squale and Blancpain. From what I understand, because of the 1000m water resistance, it is technically classified as a saturation diver, which according to ISO standards, does not require a rotating elapsed time bezel. Although, also according to those standards, a helium escape valve is, which this watch does not have. This is just what I've read on the net, and may or may not be correct. Later versions of this model were equipped with rotating bezels with a locking mechanism.

Thanks for looking!

That's one of the coolest vintage divers I've seen. I love that dome.

That's a great looking piece, congrats.

It could be the grandfather to the Ægir CD-1.

Awesome piece and I love the vintage dome.

If I may ask, what is the dia (w/o crown) and the lug to lug distance?

Thanks!

Thanks. Diameter w/out crown is 41mm, and length is 49mm lug to lug.

Nice looking watch! I've read a helium escape valve isn't really necessary for saturation diving. Just need to unscrew the crown to accomplish the same thing. Not a plug for Scurfa, but this is where I read it.

Thanks for the link. Very informative. Other than the Rolex Sea-Dweller and Doxa Conquistador, I don't believe many watches (if any) of the era were equipped with HRVs.
