Brando and Sub Tropic?

Post by Steve O. » Thu Apr 16, 2015 12:03 am

Was checking out an article about Rolex watches Marlon Brando wore through the years, and came to the infamous GMT Master with the missing bezel from Apoalypse Now. You get a pretty good look at the strap it was on in the pic below. I'll be damned if that's not an Italian SUB Tropic, which are still available today. Had one on A Breil Manta MM not long ago. Cool movie, cool watch, and cool strap.

The crown is unscrewed in that picture set. That is a continuity trick in the movies so multiple takes
once spliced together don't have the time leaping back and forth on the actors watch on the big screen.

My favorite movie, based partly on one of my favorite books.

Yes, We had to read Conrad's book in a college humanity class years ago, and then we followed it up with watching the movie in class. I've watched the movie countless times since then.

Interesting to know. I knew I had seen that picture somewhere before...

I've seen that picture and that movie countless times and never realized it had a missing bezel or noticed the Tropic strap. Add that to the fact that the photo has the crown unscrewed for a reason and you get a total DWC bad ass bit of vintage watch info.

Well done Nick and Steve. :salute:
