Arghh!!! Vintage-Schmintage

Post by rammerjammer » Sat Dec 22, 2012 4:25 pm

Just picked up a nice vintage Seiko chrono (6138-0017 - UFO) and last night after washing my hands noticed condensation under the crystal. Washing my hands! Pulled the crown and packed it in rice immediately. This morning it was clear. Still I put a little rice and the watch head in a zip lock and shipped it to Jack at IWW. Swear I can't have shit. On the bright side at least it wasn't my Speedie...

condensation is never good, that sucks, Patrick. sorry about the UFO, but 1) Jack will fix it up and 2) yeah, glad it wasn't the speedie

Bummer.

Even if you're not planning to dive a watch, vintage or not, they really should always be pressure tested. Moisture in the air can be just as damaging over time as direct water damage.

Hope it all works out. I always have all mine pressure tested. I won't keep one that won't pass (unless it's got some other sentimental value).

Had planned to send it to Jack anyway but was enjoying wearing it and procrastinated. My own damn fault for not being vigilant like Matt. The lesson here is to only buy new certified dive watches... or to not be a bonehead and take chances with vintage pieces that haven't been tested.

Every time I get a vintage diver if it's running good and don't need a service yet I all ways have the local watch maker pressure test it just to be safe it's about 20 bucks for a piece of mind.

Wish I still had a local watchmaker. Mine died a few years ago. Alexyon is aces though.
