Another Lesson In Vintage Heuers

Post by Mr Rick » Sat Oct 06, 2012 3:54 pm

Today's arrival is one of the lesser known Heuer watches. And as such, not as desirable to Heuer collectors. For this reason it tends to be more affordable on the second hand market. It's a Camaro Ref. 73345 T, powered by a manual wind Valjoux 7730 movement. It has a gold plated cushion case with a brushed finish on the upper part of the case. It measures 37mm across not including the crown, and 43mm from lug to lug. It measures only 12mm high and is fitted with a 19mm strap.

This particular example had a mildly scratched plexi crystal and the case was heavily tarnished . Most of the gold finish on the crown is gone, and one of the pusher caps has been replaced. However the chrono functions well and the movement is providing accurate time, at least in the short term.

A few minutes spent with Polywatch on the crystal, and using a fiberglass brush and a product called NEVR-DULL on the case, and the results are quite acceptable. My 'Heuer friends' have a NOS gold case and pushers and a NOS crystal, but if it were me, I'd have it serviced, and wear it proudly, just the way it is.

Here are a few pictures.

Does the fiberglass brush uses to do the sunburst pattern on the top part?

What's the significance of the Camaro namesake? I haven't seen that before. Looks great.

That is a good question. I'll have to see if I can find the answer.

I think the name Camaro was Tag's dedication to motorsports...

I think it was named after the car or something like that. I'll check the Hasslinger book later to double check.

Per Arno's book: "" The name CAMARO comes from the French, meaning "friend, companion, a good guy". Mr. Heuer wanted to use the Camaro name to make inroads into the American marketplace. ""

A must book for any serious Heuer collector.

The Chevy Camaro debuted in 1967. What year are these Heuer's from? Early 70's?

I think the very first Monacos came in 1969 and they made the last ones in the mid 70s.

Yes, the serial number on my Heuer Camaro indicates about 1970.

Fantastic, congratulations with a beautiful piece!

The valjoux 7730 is an exellent movement, very reliable and accurate, but be careful bumping it into things and such, not to mention dropping it on a concrete floor... Did it with my Breitling Top Time and straight to service! My watch maker (a Heuer man since the early sixties) told me this was a well-known weakness in the design.

The toils of vintage watch collecting I guess... :raised:
