Added another ships clock

Post by River Rat » Tue Jun 21, 2016 7:07 am

This Sunday I went to a NAWCC meeting at Glenn's Ferry Idaho closest chapter of the NAWCC near me they move the meeting every other month to other parts of Idaho. They were a good group I joined there chapter won't go often due to the long drive but if it's a four to five hour drive and the weather is good I will give it some thought. Sold a few pocket watches there since I don't collect them that much any more and bought this Seth Thomas ships bell clock made around the 1940's due to no silence switch for the bell that the more modern ones have. Had paint along the edges so was once aboard a ship when some one did a sloppy job painting the bulkhead wonder if it was in officers country on a Navy ship only place one of these fancy ones would go. At least I got my watch fix since no GTG in my area. Not bad for 150.00 she works perfect bells strike at the right time and she keeps time. Now I need to make another wooden plaque to mount it on the wall. This thing is big and heavy with a 7 inch size dial case is solid brass.

Here's how the ships bells work to tell time

On watch I use to have to use the 1MC the announcement system to pass the word onboard ship put the mike next to the ships bell on the quarter deck and strike the bell it was used back in the day when most sailors did not have a watch and became a Navy tradition.

BAD ASS Mike! I have a bag of brass stuff we brought up from a sunken destroyer off the coast of Australia. We put demo all over the ship in preparation for naval gunfire exercises. The purpose of the demo was to sink the ship if NGFS didn't take her down. Of course they did, so we had to subsequently trigger the load. Good stuff

Hey Paul
My last ship I was station on was also sunk the same way target practice the USS Mauna Kea AE-22 off the coast of Hawaii a good place to do it since it was named for a Volcano on the Big Island.

Nice Mike. Isn't the other one you have from a WWII ship?

I got about four others from the US Navy and one from the Merchant Marine, 2 from the US Army, one from the Japanese Navy and the German Navy used during WW2 plus a US Navy barometer for weather from WW2 if I ever ad another will be a US Navy issued radio room clock only model I don't have or a US Navy LOW model ships clock only made in WW2 another I don't have. There is also a zig zag clock rigged to the ships steering on the bridge to zig zag due to enemy subs used in WW2 the US Navy used a lot of stuff out there.

You should take a group pic of those Mike. That's an impressive array of history too.
