My first CPAP machine in the house.
My first CPAP machine in the house.
A few weeks ago I finally broke down and had a sleep study done. I snore like a banshee and wife wears earplugs so she can sleep. She says she never noticed I stop breathing but I really sleep more than an hour or two without rolling over and looking at the clock. I get tired during the day as well.
The doctor had a contraption that you wear around your waist. A finger monitor that checks your heart rate. And a nose piece to check your oxygen. Wear it overnight and the next day the doctor reads the results.
Results are that I have mild apnea. But coupled with the short sleep patterns and tiredness during the day, insurance will help pay for the machine.
I picked up the machine yesterday and had the maiden voyage last night.
Mixed results in my opinion. Took me a while to fall asleep. Longer than usual and it's just weird having a full mask on while trying to fall asleep. Let alone it cramming air down my throat. Everytime I moved I worried it was going to get loose.
Good news is I didn't snore according to the wife. Win for her!
I'm hoping it gets easier to sleep while wearing it and once I relax it will help with my apnea.
Wish me luck.
I'm guessing there are a few others here. Does it get easier?

Re: My first CPAP machine in the house.
My wife has it and there are a variety of masks and different ones work for people based on face shape and how the sleep. My wife settled on one called nose pillows and as the name implies the air just goes into her nose, mouth is not covered.

It’s gonna make sex awkward.

Awkward is putting it on to go to sleep during sex.hoppyjr wrote:It’s gonna make sex awkward.

Benn using CPAP since 1996 and on my third machine, so I'm an old pro. I tried the nasal pillows, but could never get used to the thing crammed up my nostrils. Used a conventional nasal mask until a year and a half ago, when I switched to the Respironics Dreamwear. It resembles the pillows device, but sits beneath your nostrils. I use it along with a chin strap and it's the most comfortable, lightweight CPAP device I've worn.
No, it's not Tourettes.
Re: My first CPAP machine in the house.
I thought i had indeed used one of these, turned out it was just a Ball Gag . Honest mistake.

I use mine to play dr/ nurse with the wife. I pretend to be asleep and she walks in, wakes me up, flips some papers around on a clipboard and leaves. I have a bill the next morning too. Not sure she quite gets the whole dr/nurse game...

Re: My first CPAP machine in the house.
I tried to use a CPAP for my apnea twice.
I never became comfortable with the mask.
I opted for an oral appliance instead; from a dentist that specialized in the devices.
It also takes some getting used to, but drastically reduced snoring issues and I prefer it to the CPAP alternative.

I often wear a mask in the bedroom.

Doctor ordered a full mask since i'm a mouth breather as well. At the fitting, I asked about the chin strap option. Almost seemed more intrusive and possibly harder to get used to. I have 30 days to try different options though.ChuckW wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2018 1:52 pmBenn using CPAP since 1996 and on my third machine, so I'm an old pro. Night two was difficult. Woke up about 2am and couldn't fall back asleep. Finally took the mask off. Got up at 0345 to exercise so not a lot of time missed.

Thanks Matt. My doctor said he sees less success with the appliance route but we did discuss it.mattcantwin wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2018 4:09 pmI tried to use a CPAP for my apnea twice.
