The Dive Watch Connection

Is anyone using a roof top tent? I have a Land Rover Discovery, with racks, that I want to set up with a RTT. I've been looking at a few different brands, new and used...they are not cheap!

Any info/recommendations would be great!

Tons of people have them here. They all don't look like they have ever been used though.

If I were you, I'd make my own.. a thick piece of treated plywood, a fold away ladder, and a suitably sized tent would do the trick.

My concern would be the weight of a full tent on the roof.

Some friends of ours have a baroud, http://www.jamesbaroudusa.com on top of their subaru. K and I have climbed around in it, and we are totally into getting one for the jeep. Light weight, solar-powered light and fan, self-ventilating and self-erecting... and they swear that the shell is aerodynamic enough that it doesn’t affect freeway driving. The hardshell versions, btw. Check ‘em out.

Not an issue. You could use a RTT on a Mini, as long as it is set up correctly.

Are you a member of any Land Rover forums? I'm on a Tacoma forum and there are countless threads on rooftop (and inside the bed) tent options.

The benefit is those guys will know the options / pluses and minuses the way we know watches.

I know there is a vast and diverse knowledge base (knives, tape, nail polish...) here, with many outdoor enthusiasts.

Also Alu-Cab should have a RTT to fit the Discovery. I know some guys with GWagens like them.

Do these guys have some sort of application which runs though forum conversations looking for their key words in order to insert spam?

I belong to a Toyota Tacoma forum where sleeping platforms are discussed routinely, so spamming there would make sense. This is kind of an unusual topic for a watch forum, so there must be a searching program in place looking for key words.

Why go the rooftop route (serious question), is it because of bears or other wild animals? They must be way more expensive than a regular tent.

I think critter resistance is a consideration, but a bear will climb your truck faster than you could. More like snakes, etc.

I think RTT provide a bit more weather resistance given they are off the ground and heavy rain won't cause a stream to run through your tent. Heavy wind might be a bit more of an issue given the tent is higher up, but if the wind is strong enough to bend the tent stays, I'll be sleeping in the truck, not the tent.

Finally, they provide a level sleeping platform for guys who are camping in rocky areas. The sleeping area is also on the same footprint as the truck, so there is arguably less impact on the environment.

I mostly camp in New England in woodland areas, so traditional tents work fine for me.

They’re also appreciated by the wife & kids. I’ve had one with the Landcruisers for quite a while and my wife and kids (younger ones) love it - mostly because the mattress inside is the same as a bed mattress - while the older kids & I each do individual tents, like Tree Frogs and such.

The footprint of the RTT also expands so it’s a very big sleeping space, which the crew needs. And when used with the vestibule attachments it makes open camping a fairly private and secluded affair. CVT is the company that I have the most experience with.

Ha! Your wife sounds like my wife. Here I am, an old Eagle Scout who has hiked and camped all over New England in all kinds of weather, and my wife is repulsed by even the thought of having to pee in the woods.

If I were to get a RTT and expect my wife to camp with me, I'd probably have to get a hitch shitter to go along with it....

Same here, or staying in an rv is her idea of camping.

That would be a great thing for freeway commutes. Might cut down on the tailgaters.

^^^if slower "shttier" drivers would quit "camping out" in the fast lane there probably wouldn't be tailgating.
