Cone Denim Mills shutting down US plant

They're shutting down their White Oak plant 12/31/17. The end of an era. Just thought I'd mention it for those into US denim, buy now before the current supply runs out. I just grabbed two pair, one from Williamsburg Garment and one from Taylor Stitch.

It's sad. Gustin, Tellason, and many others have stocks, hopefully enough for years to come.

I just backed the Gustin 1968 Selvedge. I had never looked at them before, but they're inexpensive and I really like that particular denim.

End of an era. I’m a bit of a raw denim snob and have always preferred Japanese since they tend to stretch a bit less, but Cone Mills was still good quality.

One of my students this semester interned at Williamsburg Garment. It was just her and the owner. I know the news of the factory closing hit him very hard.

It’s an end of an era. Cone Mills made nice denim, but the mills in Japan have really taken it to the next level.

Not enough interest in US made denim, let alone US made selvedge denim.

Is that high end denim actually comfortable? It looks so stiff and abrasive.

I wash mine, so yes, once it's broken in it's comfortable. Once you've worn a well made pair of jeans made from good denim, wearing mall jeans is like wearing a mall watch if you're a watch guy. And contrary to popular belief, you don't have to pay an arm and a leg. I just ordered 3 pairs of American made jeans for less than what we'd pay for a Seiko beater without blinking an eye.

Raw denim takes time and the heavier the longer.

Made in the USA is becoming more and more difficult. Taylor Stitch and a few other manufacturers have started to move production overseas as well.

Quality Raw Denim is actually soft to the touch. It takes a few days to break in but once it’s formed to you then you’re set.

Sad about Cone Mills. My favorite going away. Japanese denim is nice but just doesn’t do it for me.

Might need to stock up before cone denim prices go through the roof.

Have one pair of cone mills denim. A pair of Raleigh raw denim. Seem to be breaking in nicely...

There’s nostalgia around Cone denim, but it’s pretty uninspired and consistent IMO.
The only CM denim I have left is a pair of lightweight Tellason JGM.

Not sure of anyone read this.
With Cone Mills White Oak closing, not sure of its the chicken or the egg.
More US manufacturing moving overseas, so US made fabric isn’t needed.

According to the guys at Tellason, they have enough fabric for 2018.

Read about Cone closing several weeks ago. I’m actually surprised they lasted this long. I’m pretty easy on the few pairs I have, maybe I should get another pair of JGM’s while I still can.
