Summer Trip to Michigan

Post by rockmastermike » Mon Jul 10, 2017 7:48 pm

My wife is born in Saginaw (que Lefty Frizzell) and she is "Sagninawesome" so we flew into Detroit and drove around the Mitten - about 1100 miles.

Image

From Detroit we drove to Ann Arbor to see the Big House

Image

Back in the rental and onto to Spring Arbor where she was raised and we saw her house, every friend's house, where she had hot dogs (Frosty Boy) and where she went to elementary and high school (Western High School)

After a quick bite at the aforementioned Frosty Boy we headed to Kalamazoo - home of the mighty Western Michigan University - she and Mike (demer) are both Broncos

Spent the Night in K-Town and had dinner at Bell's Brewery and the next morning breakfast at Uncle Ernie's Pancake House - yes the pancakes were as good as advertised.

Image

Image

We headed to the coast and drove up Lake Michigan with first stop in South Haven

Image

Image

One of the little cut-outs on M22 we stopped to look over Lake Michigan. There was a "Kindness Rock Project" - Take one/Leave one with a kind message

Image

Image

Continuing North and lunch in Grand Haven

Image

Image

Image

A couple off cool things along M22 - B-17 in Manistee and Snowmobile signs (saw a horse/buggy sign but missed the picture)

Image

Image

Image

Rolled into Frankfort for dinner and family

Image

Image

Image

Spent time on the 7-Spot....Pamela's dad's boat

Image

Image

Sunsets are an event where 100's gather and when the sun sets everyone applauds to thank the sun for a beautiful day

Image

Image

Image

The famous Cherry Hut - yes - the cherry pies are delicious

Image

Image

Image

Point Betsie Light House

Image

Everyone loves a Parade

Image

Image

Image

Image

My Youngest - "Clear the Pier" into Lake Michigan

Image

Sleeping Bear Dunes - hard to capture the scale and slope of the dunes - miles of steep sand hiking. You reach one level only to see another range of dunes. And Repeat

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Back in the car and to Leland / Fishtown - Fishtown was a primitive fishing town back in the 1800's and now the shanties have been turned into boutiques

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Crossing "Big Mac" the Mackinac Bridge (5 miles) to the Upper Peninsula to hang out with the Yoopers

Image

Image

Image

Image

Old Mackinac City Light House

Image

Down South to Frankenmuth and Bronners - World's Largest Christmas Store

Image

Finally full circle and back in Detroit for dinner at Big Boy

You did more cool stuff on your vacation than I've done living here for six years. I live about a mile away from the big house. If you make it back, hit me up. I'll give you a tour of the business school.

Glad to see you enjoying your "break" in life. Also there's nothing like a Super Big Boy, which reminds me I haven't had one in a long time.

Thanks, Jacob - it was a series of "hit-n-run" stops up one side, down the other and across in places - fun trip

Snug Harbor was followed by dessert at the Pump House...."more pumpy, less grumpy" as they say

Grand Haven is/was beautiful and full off life...I can see why you love living there.

Really cool pictures. My wife's family lives in Grand Haven. I've been up there 5 or 6 times over the last 12 years for Coast Guard Festival.

Super cool Mike and great pics. Hell I thought all of the Big Boy's in the US closed down years ago.
