Gettin' Old

Post by mattcantwin » Sun Sep 04, 2016 2:09 pm

I've been splitting wood by hand with a maul for a long time.

Time to make things a bit easier.

WoodEze 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter; used it a few times and seems like it will be worth the expense.

You wanna try the Bulgarian method of chopping wood - much easier...

Hit wood with axe, so that the blade sticks into the wood - so that it's attached to the axe blade.
Flip the axe over (upside down), and swing it down onto the block.. the inertia will split the wood down the axe blade.

And then there is this option.

But I think you need more than this.

I used to hate seeing that wood truck coming down our street. My dad used to buy a couple cords of wood and it was my brother's and my chore to split and stack it. What a pain in the ass.

My fireplace is now gas...with a remote control. F wood.

I hated it also, one of my co-workers is in his 60's and he is still hand spliting his wood. Screw that.

Matt, I was told if you stack the wood criss-cross it would dry faster. Is it true?

This thread brings back memories of my dad splitting wood for the fireplace. Same way as you with a maul and wedges. Wow that's maybe 35 or 37 years ago. Funny how these memories pop up.

Should, larger surface area exposed to the air; but it takes a lot more space to store that way.

Yes it will. What we do at the mtn house is fell the trees and top them out one season, then cut and split the next. We've both manually split as well as rent a splitter. Much prefer the later but the gas powered ones are expensive, so we try to coordinate with a neighbor and share the cost.

My older brother and I had to put up 12 cord a year - my Dad would have the log truck dump the logs - he'd buck em, we'd split and haul them. He was nice enough to have the logs dropped about 100 yards from the wood shed.

He died about a decade ago and I've got his dozen or so Stihls - from 036's to 064's and 084's. I have no idea what I'd do with them: you can eat a fat dick if you think I'm ever splitting another round of fir, but I love having them around.

I've owned a pellet stove for over a decade - no fuss, no muss - just drop a bag of pellets in the hopper, and turn it on.

I too split dozens of cords of wood for my folks as a young lad - I kind of enjoyed it.

I remember cutting splitting wood with my Dad as young lad and being excited the first time I was "allowed" to try. I now live in the tropics and I think I'm over it.
