Millennial starter homes? I guess this could mean that they would be apt to not have a large family. Hell if they have one child, what will they do with all of the paintings, drawings, and macaroni necklaces kids bring home from school?
It's a beautiful world! Gerald.

^^^Throw them in the recycling bin, after sternly berating their future cold fish, emotionless children for wasting resources?

Cool article though.

i'd totally do a tiny house on some land either in the mountains or near a river, lake or beach for a second, vacation home. but not as primary residence.

that said, i hate the mcmansion phase we've gone through the last 20-30 years. i really don't want more than 2500-3000ish SF in a house. we live mostly in the 1000sf on our first floor. even after we renovate, we'd still probably spend it mostly in 1500-2000 SF.

I drown in all the shite that comes home from summer camps. He wants to keep his junk. Eventually I throw 99% of it away. He already has mountains of toys. It drives my a retentive side nuts.

Regarding the tiny house concept, it's a great idea but many don't have option to buy a lot and park a box. Half a frickin lot is $600k in my neighborhood (the slums of Redondo Beach) so buying a lot, demolishing the old house and parking a tiny house box ain't happening.

Regarding this tiny vacation getaway for NY'ers, what happened to tents and camping? Great business opportunity though. I'd love to rent camper trailer time to stressed out down towners as a business. I bet those are really happy clients. Kudos to that entrepreneur.

if you have a big enough lot in redondo beach, one of these could make a cool studio or guest house. or in law suite, if you get stuck with them. :)

Modern Tiny House

We live in a "two on a lot" condo which means we own one of two condos on a shared-ownership lot. Almost nonexistent yard but lots of square feet. It was a pre-kid purchase decision that I now kind of regret.
I grew up playing in a third acre of yard. Not a big lot for you urban folks, but spacious compared to the thumbnail I have to offer our son. He is happy playing in the driveway but I feel so bad he doesn't have a yard. And my windows don't like basketballs.

i think you're supposed to consider it like a hotel room or cabin for a weekend/week, not "live here year round" at $99/night.

Sorry Andrea. We don't have that kind of vacation in the USA. You folks across the pond have us beat hands down.

So, it's a caravan? One of those things that adds to the UK road congestion in the summer along with roadworks and tractors.

i don't think they're meant to be that kind of mobile. they're movable, not mobile. think really nice mobile home vs an RV.

Damnit Andrea coming back to work after just 2 weeks off can be a nightmare. Email inbox is 10 pages deep. Nothing that should have happened (in your absence) was completed.
I'm so jealous.

I was just speaking to my parents about putting one of these in their backyard (randomly they recently moved to Redondo Beach). They have an r2 lot, but part was sold to neighbor in past, so not enough square footage to build a 2nd unit. But... they have a long corner lot that would be great for a wheeled home that could get around some zoning issues. My wife, who is a city planner, is checking on details, so we'll see if this comes to fruition.
