We live 2 blocks from an elementary school. The traffic is bad in the AM and as others have noted, there are sports at the field in the afternoons, as well as PTA meetings in the evenings. Overflow parking is up and down the street. Luckily, we are just beyond that. I wouldn't buy within that 1 block radius.

I live about two blocks from my local elementary school (and not on the main street), which is perfect for me. We miss most of the heavy street traffic and are far enough away so that we can't hear even a little sound from the school, but we will have a short walk to school when my kid starts Kindergarten. We are able to walk and take advantage of the facilities when we want, and the streets are often well-kept and safe.

So I don't think I'd want my backyard backed up against the school, but I don't mind living close to a school.
pretty much my experience (except the whole having kids part).

Nope. Same for churches and power lines.

We use to live near a school a few years ago and it was not a great experience.

I wouldn't live next door to a school. Traffic is a nightmare twice a day and there is the noise at lunchtime.
Depending on the school there might be adult night classes so traffic and parking will be bad in the evenings too.

It’s actually pronounced "I lean..." (sorry Matt, I couldn’t resist the straight line!)

So... Stewart... where did you end up living, anyways?

Don’t judge. As I understand it, he’s only Irene four or five times a month.

[My advice is this...go there and park a few times at different times of the day (around morning commute, midday, evening commute, weekend). Walk around and get a feel for what it's like as far as noise and activity.
Mark does this all the time. In his underwear and a trench coat...

I love being next to a school. easy on my child and really I am at work during the day so I don't hear anything anyway. Mind you Canada is a lot different than the states.
