Do you eat them, or just the eggs? My wife really wants chickens. Are they a pain in the ass?

I might get some this season if I can convince my daughter to let me convert your play house/swing into a chicken coop.

we have a lady here who lets you rent the chickens, coop and they will give you feed for them for 8 months. then they take them back in the winter since they don't produce as much during that time. kind of cool is you decide you don't want to do them fulltime.

my dad had up to 100 chickens at one time, we helped him harvest the older ones when they stop producing eggs.

Just eggs, usually 3 per day.

That's pretty impressive. Is there anything weird, or gross, about the eggs? I'm thinking of something analogous to the difference between raw whole milk and the skim stuff normal people buy.

just like the store bought version, I just think they taste better as long as you do NOT give them vegetarian feed

If not vegetarian feed, what kind of feed do you think makes a better egg? Serious question, though I was tempted to ask if you are feeding them the old, dead chickens.

How do you milk them? Do they have tiny nipples?

Serious questions.

i think the biggest difference (and not just your own, but often the farmer's market eggs as well) is that you're going to get inconsistent sizes. if you're just making omelets, probably not a huge deal. but if you're baking and your recipe just calls for X eggs, it could make a difference.
