How do you buy an engagement ring?

Post by FlyPenFly » Sat Apr 09, 2016 3:25 pm

Looks like that time has come... :hanged: :hanged: :hanged:

What's a good place to shop for one for the best deal possible?

Got engaged in February.

Don't go to a chain jewelry store. Overpriced and the quality isn't up to par with the pricing.

I went to a diamond wholesaler and bought a diamond. Then I went to a shop that does castings. Picked a setting cast and chose the metal and karat.

After that was done, the casting shop sent the setting to the diamond wholesaler and they set the stones.

It's not off the shelf and you save on inflated store pricing.

Win/win

Congratulations!

I'm of no help - my wife worked at Jarrods when we got engaged and she already had one picked out.

Congratulations!

My wife and I had our jeweler friend make our rings. He brought stones from the diamond district for us to look at. Once the stone was picked, my wife designed the ring and he made it.

Buy the stone first. Look at a lot of them. You'll know the one when you see it. It helps to have an idea of the cut she likes when you start looking.

My girlfriend wants a vintage ring. They're not cheap and finding the one she wants is a pain. She has taken me to vintage jewelry shows and whatnot and they're a bore.

Truth. Chain jewelry stores (even the fancy ones) are a huge rip off. You can get a much better stone for the same money at a wholesaler.

I was lucky to have a very savvy friend who got engaged a year before me do all the leg work. So I just had to go to the same shop (and salesperson) he used. She was the top salesperson at the shop because she had a huge customer base of old Chinese ladies in the Bay Area.

All good advice, especially the part about avoiding chain stores. They'll want to sell you what's in the case, where an independent will work with you. The easy answer on "How to Buy"? Scrape up the highest limit card you can find, pat her on the head, and practice saying "Yes, Dear" a lot. Buying an engagement ring is one of those things that has a mystical, almost supernatural meaning for women, but typically mystifies most men. No hunter bagging a world record animal can hold a candle to a woman showing off a new engagement ring to her single friends.
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

Thanks guys, sounds like the way to go is to first get a diamond then get it set on a white gold or platinum band.
