Southeast Asia

Post by aikiman44 » Sat Mar 12, 2016 8:08 am

Following 20+ hours airborne, we arrived in Hanoi 2 days ago. After a sleepy first day we got out on a slightly less muddled 2nd day.we're at the Metropole; a very old historic hotel. People from Presidents to Mick Jagger have stayed here. Image

A bomb shelter was discovered beneath the hotel. ImageImage

The Hanoi Hilton was a French prison where they tortured and guillotined Vietnamese nationalists.
You'll see John McCain's flight suit and parachute. The propaganda is how well they treated captured American flyers during the American War. A Vet/West Point instructor with us was incensed. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Fantastic. Go to Cha Ca La Vong and ask for the eye drops. It's a giant water beetle pheromone they add to the dipping sauce that has no flavor but has a wonderful aroma of ripe pears.

Enjoy the trip. If you have the time the overnight rail trip to Lao Cai and Sapa is worth the trip north.

Very cool trip. Being of that vintage, I have to ask if they get pissed when you call it Saigon instead of Ho Chi Minh City.
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.
