I highly recommend these over-ear headphones

Post by Heuerville » Tue Feb 09, 2016 5:58 pm

First off.. I'm no audiophile. I know jack-shit about headphones, but I know good from bad!

I watch a good amount of catch-up TV on my laptop, and having recently spent $40 on a pair of headphones that turned out to be utter shite, I was pissed off.
I read a couple of reviews and went for a pair of JVC HA-RX900's.. and they are superb. I've been using them for about a month, and for a relatively cheap set of headphones, they knock it out the park.
Not sure what they cost in the US, but here they are about £65-70 - about $90-100.

I'm sure that some audio experts may wax lyrical about this, that and the other.. but for the money, I think they are superb!

Well worth the money - just thought I'd pass it on !

The 650's are very good. Are you driving them out of am amp?

I settled on this:

^^^Mike is the headphone amp baller.

If it's real listening, I use a pair of AKG studio headphones, since I have them for work. Otherwise, crappy iwhatev from the Apple Store, so if I fall asleep listening to Carlin's hardcore history podcasts, I don't drool on something good. I might try the JVCs; good post.

That's my point  The world of sound/headphones seems even more complex than watches.. but for a good set of headphone for the average Joe, the JVCs are great. Having looked around online, seems you can get a set for $60-70.

There are lots of great headphones available. Just don't compare them to better ones and you will be happy.

I have both 315 and 215. Had 215, lost them, bought 315 and then found my 215. Really want the 845. Heard them and they were incredible.

Sound is a pretty personal thing.

There are good deals on the Audio Technica ATH M50X's at the moment (http://www.cnet.com/au/products/audio-t ... -ath-m50x/) which mated to a decent headphone amp (something like a FiiO E12) will give you very accurate sound at a decent price.

I thinks that's right. A lot of it is recall.

A college buddy of mine once told me a story. He was doing some studio work in Nashville when he wandered down the hall and stumbled upon Jeff Beck listening intently to a playback on a cheap boom box. When he asked why he said Beck told him because that's what the kids hear.

It made a lot of sense.

V-Moda M300, Bose mIE2

Try Koss 'The Plug' - very nice for under 10 bucks.

Not a big Grado fan, but the Sennheiser's are the business. I had a pair of HD650's that remain my favourites to this day.

Indeed, friends don't let friends by Bose. I wouldn't even call the sound quality all that reasonable from what I've heard, and it certainly isn't anything acceptable for the price.

However, I'm very happy with Grado (my much-abused ten-year-old SR80s are still alive), Beyerdynamic DT48Es (all-metal German dome of solitude with unbeatable midrange), AKG K701s (open-backed bliss, and great for a session on the electric piano too), but my favourite set is definitely the all-function industrial-lookin' GMP 8.35Ds:

Image
(the balled-up thing is the remains of a sticker put on to cover up the logo)

Indestructible, good isolation, great sound, and fun to listen to. Definitely my go-to travel cans; you can literally stomp/hammer on them or even run them over and they'll just spring back:

Besides the ridiculous durability and high sound quality, it's sweet that their 35-ohm impedance doesn't require messing around with auxiliary amplification to get decent volume. I find that headphone amps are more trouble than they're worth.

HD25s are a great recommendation, too.

I use V Moda Crossfades. Solid construction witj 50mm drivers. They were about £120 and can handle all I throw at it. I am no audiophile but did a lot of research to strike the balance of sound vs money. I listen to metal and and also run my ESP guitar and Blackstar valve amp through these with no worries

I miss my HF2's and my HF1's. Nice easy to drive headphones. Used to have a Pico DAC/Amp. Love Justin's work.

There are so many new headphone mfg's these days making some really nice sounding gear like Hifiman and Audeze.
