Ceramic Grills
Ceramic Grills
Looking to buy a ceramic, kamado grill in the next few weeks for grilling and smoking. Have it down to a classic large Big Green Egg and an 18" Kamado Joe. Have read dozens of reviews, and each has pros and cons. I know a few guys who have BGEs, and they all love them. Does anyone have any experience with the Kamado Joes?
Ceramic Grills
I guess I don't know much about grilling but are these charcoal only? Grilling or can they also be used as a smoker? The weber I have works great and also has a gas line ran directly to it. Never have to fill it up. But something about these types has always intrigued me.
Edit: I've heard of the BGE but never joes but they seem to be very similar.

Re: Ceramic Grills
Yeah, these are charcoal. Main advantages are heat retention and heat adjustment flexibility, so you can sear at say 700-800 degrees as well as smoke low and slow, with moister meats either way. Another benefit is pizza, which seems to work really well on these, and tastes almost like pizza from a wood-fired oven .

I'm back to using a gas grill for the first time in years. I'm not happy. I'd also like one of those BGEs.

I'm an Egg whore. Nothing better...steaks at 700 degrees direct and can do a brisket at 235 for 10+ hours on a single load of charcoal.
Stupid price, but so are a lot of things we all like....

I'm also looking into kamado grills. I'm not sure what size to get, and since the BGE is so expensive, I want to get it right. With my gas grill, if I only want to cook a couple things I can turn on just one burner, but I guess with charcoal it's all or nothing.

Re: Ceramic Grills
One of the great things about the egg is that you can get it hot in less than 30 min, cook a few things, and close it up - leaving most of the charcoal intact. I use the same charcoal for several cooks...
Gas will always be more convenient.

My father in law tried and tried to find a cheaper alternative to the BGE that was as good. He bought a couple knock offs including a komodo joe a couple of years ago. He ended up with a BGE because there is not a cheaper alternative that is as good.

Thanks, Rahul. I predict you loving the BGE and getting into it in a big way
I'm sure the place that you buy it will let you know, but make sure that you get a platesetter and a good firestarter. One of the best tips that someone gave me is to have a small fan to blow into the bottom vent after you light the lump coal. It will get you to temperature much quicker. This has saved me a ton of time.

Unexpectedly got the green light to buy one today. I'm getting a decent package deal on a large Egg with platesetter, nest, ash tool, and some lump and fire starter. Can't wait!
