Coolers

Post by smalls » Fri Feb 27, 2015 6:14 pm

So with spring and summer quickly approaching (I hope) I've been mulling around the idea of purchasing a Yeti cooler or the like. Looking at the Tundra 45. The family and friends do several tailgating events during the spring and several weeks at the lake and beach during the summer. So are these "elite" coolers worth their price or would I be better served to just keep filling up the igloo?

I've got the 50 and like it. Is it honestly worth the price? Probably not, but i don't worry about hinges breaking and it keeps my beer quite cold.

I bought one and sold it, it was cool but I felt like the price wasn't justified. I went back to a old Igloo we have had for 10 years,

I've read a million reviews on Yetis, Engels, etc. and I'm just not sure they're worth it for me, as much as I've tried to justify one. We camp a lot, and a cheap Coleman Extreme, with adequate ice, will keep things nice and cold for a long weekend in the middle of the summer. I also like not having to worry about someone taking off with my high-end cooler.

I used four 90-liter Igloos for about ten years for business. In and out of cars, trucks, planes and trains and never broke. They kept highly perishable food chilled on overnight trips many many times.

Yetis (particularly Yeti trucker hats) are quite trendy 'round these parts.

Are they worth it? Probably not. Do I still want one? Hell yeah. Actually, after reading that Yeti isn't s made in USA product, I found Bison Coolers (formally known as Brute but they had to change names for trademark reasons). Made in USA and similar price to Yeti.

So for those who have them, does it actually hold ice longer?

From what I understand, you need to pre chill them for best results. Day or two in advance, put ice in. Empty and refill with new ice and ready to go.

That's true of any cooler. I'd fill them and leave them open in a walk-in cooler overnight till travel time. They'd keep everything chilled or frozen all through the next day. That was often to the Caribbean.

I have the soft side Polar Bear coolers and they keep things cold for a long time at the beach.

Get a Pelican.

When you're not using it to cool drinks, you can store your SKXs.

Or not. Because SKXs are cool already.

I really don't see how you guys can "camp" with a Walmart ice cooler. That's just too BSears and Seth (even though Seth is trying to back off a bit by being in Florida)

Camping? That's when you don't have turn-down service, right?

Screw pre-cool. Get some dry ice, leave it in the butcher paper / wrap and throw it on top of the ice. Drink those beers all night and the ice hardly melts.

My fav from high school was a bag of ice inside 6 brown-paper grocery bags (2x triple-bagged). Held up for hours without leaks and the beer was pretty much gone by then anyway. Damn, how did I live long enough to go to college?

This is probably one of those items you cannot justify. Get it if you like it. Can't think of a time when I have seen a cheap Igloo or Coleman cooler "failing". Nashville far as cooling goes - closed cell foam r-value doesn't varry much - pretty much a function of thickness.

Igloo has a higher end- Yukon series...

Maybe if you were transporting organs but I'd stick with the
Igloo--(marine series)... Then again I don't camp..

Those Yeti's and Bisons are nice, though...If you like it go for it..

I'll probably break down and buy one before this summer. My brain keeps telling me that I need one and I keep trying to talk myself into it. Ive looked at the other brands online but there's a yeti dealer just up the street so will likely go that route.

The marine series igloos (all white) are good enough for the sun of the caribbean.

My friend has the Yeti ice bucket - it's pretty awesome. Had a block of ice in there for at least 2 days. Would I buy one of their coolers? Maybe, but they are really pricey.

What I did buy were 2 of their cups. Now those are definitely worth it.

They are stupid expensive, but compared to other stuff we spend our money on they really aren't that expensive. Even if you bought the biggest one I'm sure the mortgage would still get paid.
