Different price point than watches, so you can go down the rabbit hole fast.

The whole not washing thing seems to have been replaced by wash your pants.
Not sure if people are sitting doing soaks in the tub either.

This is what I am wearing mostly. Two pairs of RGT and a pair of PBJ.
ImageI’ll break out the lighter weight Tellasons and Shockoes when the weather warms up.
However, I have a few pairs of Levi’s 513 for traveling, the stretch is nice.

Love the PBJ denim. I have a pair of XX-005’s, which is the wrong fit for me and I don’t wear them much as a result unfortunately.

I’ve tried going back to regular denim several times, but I just can’t do it. I guess a comparison would be like going from a nice mechanical watch to a quartz Fossil. Once you’ve made the switch it’s hard to go back.

I have the XX-012s. They are finally breaking in after a year.

It’s like watches, there’s a difference. Typically, they can range from sub $100, ie Levis, Unbranded, up to $700 for Japanese denim.

Rogue Territory is around $220-270 and Pure Blue Japan start around $300.

Biggest mistake when buying the first pair is getting the wrong size.

Why are sizes not typical to other jeans?

You have to account for shrinkage and stretch. Unsanforized raw denim will shrink (sometimes significantly) when washed or soaked. But then it will also stretch. I’ll admit, it’s a pain in the ass until you find the right size/fit. Sometimes quite literally - break in periods can be brutal. But all worth it in the end IMO.

The “entry level” to raw denim is usually the APC New Standard. They are sanforized and won’t shrink much, though they stretch like crazy. They are a good starting point to see if you like it.

Vanity sizing. Sizes differ from brand to brand and sometime between different cuts from the same brand.
For example, 3sixteen is not vanity sized, a 34 is roughly a 34. Rogue Territory is vanity sized, so a 31 is actually a 34.

Unsanforized denim isn’t pre-shrunk, so you need to rely on what the predicted shrinkage will be. You can control how much it shrinks by how you wash it and by the temp.
It get complicated.

My wife bought me a pair of J Crew Japanese selvedge blah blah blah and they're the size I normally buy (not vanity sized). I'm not sure how they compare to other fancy jeans, but they have held up well and fit well. I do wash them, and they haven't shrunk of faded much.

So high level question. What's the overall benefit to selvedge? Other than spending 10x. Too lazy to sift thru 200 posts.

IMO selvedge is better quality than more model denim. Raw denim is unlike your clasp. The wear and tear is unique to you.

As for manufacturing, there is more transparency, ie, RGT is made in LA, Tellason is made in SF, N&F is made in Canada. More info on the mills, etc. Japanese brands have unique denim made for them.

If you care about those things it’s worth it. Otherwise, it may not be.

Overall quality/attention to detail and the fact that they form to your body after a while. Once the fit is dialed in they really become your own and fade like you’ll never see on crap denim.

Sounds cool and can be a rabbit hole. I'll have to try this. Same thing happened from a thread about shaving with old school razors etc. Now I'm into that whole scene. Lol. Love it btw.

Also, raw denim avoids the treatment that most jeans got through to look aged. Waste of water and harsh chemicals are used.
