Cold Brewed Coffee

Post by fastward » Sun Dec 15, 2013 10:41 am

I just started cold brewing coffee this week. Good stuff.

Any cold brewed coffee that you guys recommend?

I found that any beans I liked for regular drip worked for cold brewed.

If you like flavored coffee, cold brewing extracts a lot more flavor than drip. In the summer I like to cold brew hazelnut flavored beans.

Cold brewing is awesome. The coffee is exceptional. I found all of the beans I used regularly work even better cold brewed.

Do you then heat the coffee or drink it iced?

I usually just do Keurig then add ice after. Probably the wrong way to go about it huh. Any advice for an ultra noob?

1. Crush it with a sledge hammer
2. Get a pour over dripper and a conical burr grinder
3. Grind the needed beans immediately before use

This worked when I was your age. Get back to me in 15 years and let me know if you are still doing that every time you want a cup of coffee.

It takes me 5 minutes start to finish and that includes boiling water on my stove. If you have an instant hot in your sink it takes 2 minutes.

Shaps a funny mofo.

Makes his own coffee from scratch
Writes awesome watch reviews
Collects rare vintage pieces
Constantly searches for new editions.
Use to make some kick ass straps.

Meanwhile naked girls are running around his neighborhood with signs attached to them that say

Oh yeah, his brother is next door doing the same shit.

I've cold brewed a few times. Makes great coffee. Lack of heat keeps you from getting all of the bitter tannins and oils from the beans. I've made a few stouts with coffee and you must use cold brewed added after fermentation. Hot brewed is too oily and will damage the head.

I have done the pour over method and ice before. It's good, but usually I use a French press with cold water. Let it sit about 10 hours before pressing it. I think its a bit smoother. The big down side is keeping it made, cuz you can't whip up a batch real quick.

I appreciate well-made coffee, and I did cold brew for awhile at home, but it was a PITA. Now, I only have "good" coffee when I go out. At home, with two boys to take care of, I use Starbucks VIA packets. Lollll. Take that, connoisseurs.

It's better than Keurig at least.

No way. Some of the Keurig pods are pretty good. That Via stuff is nasty.

I can't tell the difference between good and bad coffee. Help a newb here - what's a discerning factor in the taste and/or smell? Is it the boldness?
