Time for a Bourbon / Scotch thread...

Post by jimyritz » Sat Nov 23, 2013 2:03 pm

As we head into the holidays, it's nice ti share a special bottle of scotch, bourbon, rye, etc with friends and family...

Was thinking about Makers 46, Blantons, Woodford Double Oak, or maybe a nice bottle of Scotch....

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Mike

I'm venturing into the bourbon world. Bought a bottle of single barrel Evan Williams on the fact that it was super cheap ($27?) and it had a really high rating. Tastes great to me but I'm no expert!

I like makers mark and 46. But I don't know much else about others.

I've killed a few bottles of Makers 46. Good pricing at Costco.

I like Makers Mark and Knob Creek Bourbon. Not much for Scotch. I think getting sick on Scotch Island in high school destroyed any possibility of enjoying Scotch.

Drew has high praise for Costco's brand of bourbon for the price. I'm down to try it out.

I like Wild Turkey too. I like that spiciness and strength more than the overpowering sweetness of some bourbon.

You guys are lucky, Costco in NC can't have a liquor license.

Go with woodford reserve or blantons for bourbon, but Scotch is my first love. I just bought a bite of Glenfiddich 15 to put in the cabinet. If you're new to the world of Scotch, stick with the highland distilleries because they're more smooth and go down easier. I'd you want something smoky, try Ardbeg, Laphroaig, or Lagavulin from the Islay region of Scotland....but remember that they won't go down as easy as the highland or Spey side varieties.

Anna and I have tried many kinds of Whisky, Whiskey and Bourbon; Paddys, Tullamore Dew, Jamesons, Bushnells, Glenfiddich, Southern Comfort, Johny Walker, Jim Beam, etc etc. But at the end of the day we keep coming back to Jack Daniels - not technically a bourbon because it's filtered. But we love it!

I've never not drank Southern Comfort to the point of vomiting. There is nothing comforting about that swill.

I'm getting tight on a nice bottle of Bruichladdich single malt Islay tonight (The Laddie Sixteen, to be exact).

Gotta bottle of Michter's US*1 unblended whiskey in reserve, just in case...

Just tried some of this stuff recently.
Completely different - but pretty damn good.
Half the price of the above.

That's my choice also. Known in Scotland (so I was told) as the lady's scotch, but who cares? Beautifully smooth.

Scotch = whisky from Scotland. I think it came about because the drink originated in Ireland, hence in UK pubs, asking for whisky would get you a cheaper blend, but asking for an "Irish" or a "Scotch" you get, well Irish whisky . . . you get the idea.

The Japanese whisky thread from the other day motivated me to try this little bottle I had picked up ages ago.
Damn I am sold. Smells amazing and has a sweet floral taste, but still with some real fire. I will be looking for a full size bottle soon.
