Do you guys treat your Saddleback leather

Post by smalls » Wed Jun 19, 2013 9:52 am

Got a new small wallet for Father's Day and it just feels really dry. When I open it I can see some minor cracking/splitting on the spine. Do you guys rub anything on your leather or is this par for the course? I've got the medium wallet and haven't noticed this. Here's a pic so you can kinda see what I'm talking about. Just wondering if anybody treated there's and if so, what with?

I have some of their Chamberlain leather milk. Don't know if it's any good - I haven't used it yet.

Shoot them an email - they'll take care of ya. :)

You should most certainly treat your leather goods. I like Lexol leather conditioner for a cheap solution. Venetian shoe cream is better and more expensive. Renovateur by Saphir is my favorite though.

They only really endorse Chamberlain, I believe it is Dave's relative who developed or owns it. Not a bad product either way. A lot of people have personal preference. For conditioning I like saphir or lexol. For waterproofing it is obenauf's LP. Obenauf's also has a good oil.

Styleforum.net has a lot of good info. They even have a saddleback thread that is hundred of pages long.

Sounds about right for them.

I've used Pecard leather dressing on my casual boots and shoes in the past, and it seems to work well. Supposedly water-proof, too. Never used it on a wallet, but don't see why it wouldn't work there, too.

+1 for Pecard leather dressing
Also (make sure you do a colour test first as it can darken leather) Leather Honey

I use Pecard's on things I want to stay definitely the exact same colour
Leather Honey is *brilliant* on dried out vintage leather and I've used it on everything from a briefcase to my flying gloves and jacket to hiking boots. The gloves regained that slightly moist *cling* of new ones, from being salt encrusted and raspy (I washed them with hand soap, before using the Leather Honey)

I suggest Saphir. I used it on a near-new pair of Allen Edmonds and they looked better than they did when I bought them.

Short answer is treat it how you want it to look, do you want it shiney like patten leather oxfords, then build up wax on it, and be prepared to maintain it. Do you want it staying similar to the factory finish, probably going to find yourself using a very light conditioner like Lexol, but as with anything, try in a small inconspicous area and watch for darkening. Do you want to age, antique it? Follow me...

These are tobacco bags so they are open face, i believe all the other dyed bags have a smoother surface and age/weather very differently, compare a saddle to an old bomber jacket.

I've got a question.

my daughter bought me a Saddelback Tobacco leather notepad holder for Christmas.

I conditioned the outside with Lexol conditioner.

now, the outside is much lighter in color than the inside part. You can now feel the nap of the leather on the outside, whereas the inside has a dark, oil or wax feel to it.

Does anyone know of a product (wax or oil) that I can use to restore the slick, dark look as I don't like the lighter, nap feel that is on it right now.

Also, I'm in Canada and noticed this store has a few things. Would anything on here work?

Thanks
James

I like those, but have some Jackson's that I like to use, especially on leather straps.

Like to oil the saddle while it's on her back.

That's not the first time I've heard that, but it always makes me feel special. Thanks Terry!
