Gotta talk socks
So, I know this place well enough to know that some of you boot connoisseurs have probably already sought out the world's best boot socks. Curious what they might be. I know that Maestro Wu has received some that are da bomb from one or the other Mod Chris' running this madhouse; what floats your boat, socks-wise, for those IR Redwings et al.?
(I mean, besides these)

Re: Gotta talk socks
Nothing fancy here. I buy these Hanes crew socks in black at Target. Nicely cushioned, breathe well, and they never quit on you. Cheap as hell too. Keep in mind I wear jeans 99% of the time and I wear my Red Wings without insoles.

Re: Gotta talk socks
Daily wear are Darn Tough Micro Crews. Cold climate but they work in the summer too as they breathe well. Lifetime guarantee but I've never seen a holy pair in 5 years. Just picked up some lighter weight Darn Tough-dress socks I guess-and they're very nice. Probably be my summer daily wear.
Darn Tough is a VT company and all their socks are made in USA (I think) and have lifetime guarantees. They make a million types as well. A little pricey but I've been getting them at shoebuy for good prices with their discounts. I've tried most of the other brands-Smartwool (blow chimp), Bridgedale (2nd favorite), Thorlo (decent) and others I can't think of right now.

Re: Gotta talk socks
I personally like thigh-highs.
As for socks; I've liked the 5:11 socks but recently found some great socks at Costco, which are great for boot wear and don't slip down like normal socks do. I'll post the name when I get home.

I'm not very fussy with socks, though I bought a bunch of merino wool socks at REI for really cold weather and can't recommend them enough. SO much warmer than cotton.

Argyles baby, straight up argyles.
Re: Gotta talk socks
The Costco ones are labeled "Weatherproof, since 1948". They come 4 pairs to a pack, which I believe was about $10.
- wool blend
- packed two brown/two olive green or four pair black
- arch support
- moisture wicking
- full cushion footbed
For me, when wearing boots my feet are either hot or cold. Surprisingly, these Costco socks keep me pretty comfy overall. A bargain IMO.

Re: Gotta talk socks
Day to day, Red Wing black cotton socks (they must have a bit of lycra in them, because they hold perfect form overall multiple washes) and Red Wing merino wool socks for winter-time. And then I wear Red Wing heavy winter wool socks for hiking, snow-shoeing and x-country skiing.
And then double-layer wicking socks for running.
And of course, Polo Ralph Lauren Argylls for shirt and tie / suit.

I'm travelling through Bucharest at the moment; socks seem relevant.
- No cotton, ever.
- Good-quality wool beats cashmere (too delicate).
- Patterns and colours beat plain greys and blacks.
- Over-the-calf length preferred.
- Made in England is usually a good sign.
- White socks only go with gym clothes.

Re: Gotta talk socks
I am kind of surprised that with all you fancy footwear wearing mofos, most wear crappy cotton tube socks.
Personally, I have had good luck with smart wool and fox river socks. I personally hate wearing crappy wal mart hanes socks now because the more premium socks breathe so much better and just fit well.

Yeah, that's totally whack. It's like putting a Rolex Sub on a cheap nylon NATO, or something...streetracer101 wrote:I am kind of surprised that with all you fancy footwear wearing mofos, most wear crappy cotton tube socks...
Seriously, thanks for the input thus far, folks.
Next up: boxers or briefs

I ordered some Micro Crews. Let's see if I like them any better than my cheapo Hanes.moishlashen wrote:Daily wear are Darn Tough Micro Crews.
