Holy shit. I frankly thought I had it bad when I worked in the men's shoe dept at Dillard's during my first year of law school (even though technically we weren't supposed to have outside employment the first year - f that, I've legally worked since I was 16 and didn't like the idea of not working). Granted, my shoe collection was basically J&M, Cole Haan and Ecco, I did try to venture outside that realm a few times, but found it cost prohibitive. Though, I have considered dropping up to $500 for a pair of shoes, but never did. Hell, no way I could even fathom that right now, and I wear dress shoes 5 days a week! Nice shit, dude. I don't dig on the loafers and mocs, but those captoes are f'n sweet. ;)

Absolutely - they are, of course, far, far too valuable to actually wear.

Loafers seem to be a "love them or hate them" style. I obviously love them, but I've talked to plenty of people who wouldn't be caught dead in a pair. Those people generally tell me they find them either "old-manish" or effeminate. Oh well - to each their own.

Loafers are the "Mesh Bracelets" of the shoe world :)

I agree, definitely set the tone for the post. Did not even now "Camp Moccasin" was a shoe category. Perhaps because I am only 36. I assume such a shoe is accompanied by a pipe and smoking jacket?

I rue the day I found Leather Soul:

http://leathersoulhawaii.com/new-arrivals/

Great shoes and service.

And thanks to David (dammit) for mentioning Leffot. They've got an interview with The Shoe Snob:

Camp Mocs are a preppy favorite. I think they were featured in the Official Preppy Handbook. LL Bean was the go to place for them for a long time, but many afficionados have turned on Bean because they're supposedly not as good as they used to be. I have two pairs of a more recent vintage and think they're just fine. If you want something more old school and made in the USA, you can check out Quoddy Trail or Rancourt. Quite a bit more, however. I actually have a pair of Quoddys from back when they cost less than $100. They currently list for over $200.

I'd second the recommendation on Leather Soul. I've never purchased from them, but the owner has posted on Styleforum and Ask Andy About Clothes, and he's a really good guy. People rave about his service. I think he's also started either displaying or selling vintage watches.

For me, it's that my f'n heel is too narrow and I walk out of them. I've never found a pair that fit just right so I stick with what works and that's lace ups. reminds me, I have a couple of relatively inexpensive pairs of captoes in an cart somewhere out there in cyber space, I think zappos. At the rate i go thru dress shoes, I would go broke buying the expensive shit and that's even taking into consideration re-soling prior pairs.
