Dress Shoes..Oxfords, Wingtips, etc....

Post by Kustoms4ever » Mon Nov 05, 2012 2:10 pm

I have seen a lot of Boot threads and those are nice but I have to wear dress shoes to work everyday. I usually buy Florsheim or Cole Haan but the last few pairs of both those brands have been absolute shit and have fallen apart after a few months.

Like to see what you guys buy. I wouldn't mind spending a lot more if the quality and durability were there. I wouldn't even mind a nice bespoke pair if I could find someone that does them.

These are the two you want in the mid price point range. Obviously you can pay more if you're so inclined.

Allen Edmonds are the best introduction to quality made shoes IMO. They care usually under $300, and can be found on sale without much difficulty. A good tip is to buy from Nordstroms during their Anniversary Sale every July. Basic models are on sale every year, so you can get your oxfords, wingtips, etc at a great discount.

Just got a pair of Cole Haan's that I really like, but don't wear them daily. The Nike tech in them makes them very comfortable. Have also heard great things from Alden but never had the chance to try a pair.

All of my dress shoes are Johnston&Murphy. Prices range depending on style but I'm a big fan of their Italian Collection, especially if you find them on sale. My dad's worn them for over 20yrs and it's all I wear

It's too bad they're made in China now. It's an old brand like Floresheim that was better 20 years ago.

Since J&M is headquartered in Nashville, I have several. Most are pretty crappy, but I have one pair of the Italian made ones that are solid!

I have an old pair of Cole Haan made in USA that are nice. Don't wear them very often though as I can wear whatever I want to work. I even have a decent pair of Kenneth Cole made in Italy. My rule of thumb is if they are made in USA, Italy, or UK etc they're probably good shoes and will last. China not so much.

You definately get what you pay for in shoes.

 A good pair of shoes will last a looong time (and can be repaired by a craftsman). I'm wearing these now: http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Peal-Co.- ... tentpos=17, and they are great.

$120 for a pair of Nikes that will last a year works out to about $10/month. That would mean the above shoes would only have to last five years to be comparable. They'll last a lot longer than that, though.

Yep-those are lifetime shoes vbus. I bought the New Balance 990's (I think)-the ones made in USA and they are still functional 7 years later. I wear Asics Kayanos and get a year out of them-but they fit me the best.

This, also hand made in Wisconsin. The footbed is cork which will mold to your foot over time for increased comfort. Send them back to Allen Edmunds and they will recondition/resole them and make them look like new for $100. My next shoe. Spent too much on watches lately so my last purchase was tan Cole Haan wingtips, although I'm going to all sewed construction from here on.

rumor has it the 990's are shipped from china with a unsigned tag in them and then a US made sticker is applied to it. at least this is what was rumored to have happened a while back.

Alden and Allen Edmonds are good, although I've had some issues with Alden's quality control in my cordovan Indys. I've heard that this is uncommon, though.

Vass, however, is great: http://www.vass-cipo.hu/

Fully handmade, including hand welting. They pretty much scream quality. I'm very happy with every pair of mine.
