Shaving
Re: Shaving
I can't believe I just found this thread. Been doing this since late spring and has become my main hobby. Spent much more time on shaving forums lately instead of DWC and watch forums.
I use a '60 Gillette Fatboy, '64 Gillette Slim, '54 Gillette Super Speed, and a new Edwin Jagger DE89. I have 4 Semogue brushes, a Rooney, and a custom badger. I like ALL the Proraso products, especially the green aftershave splash. Captains Choice Bay rum is also a favorite.
Check this guy out. http://www.mikesnaturalsoaps.com His shave soaps are amazing. I like Razorock too.
For someone wanting to try this out here are my thoughts:
Razor: New - Edwin Jagger DE89
Vintage - Gillette Super Speed (late 40s-50s)
Brush: boar - Semogue (620, 1250, 1460, 1470, 1305)
badger - Edwin Jagger, Rooney, Simpson (depends on how much you want to spend)
Soap: Proraso Green tub, Mikes Natural
Cream: Proraso Green or CO Bigelow ($), Taylor of Old Bond Street($$), Art of Shaving ($$$)
Blades: I like Astra SPs and Personna Reds. Just get a sampler pack with 5-7 different ones and try them all. Probably the most YMMV thing in shaving.
Some sites I like to peruse:
www.westcoastshaving.com
www.italianbarber.com
www.bullgooseshaving.net
www.vintagebladesllc.com
www.badgerandblade.com

Re: Shaving
Well, as a follow up. I really enjoy the process. I can't say that the shave is any better than I received from the fusion razor, but the preparing of the soap and what not is very enjoyable.
I have been a straight scrape on the way out of the shower guy ....no gel/soap/creme....for so long, I thought this would be a drag.
Nope....cool.
Thanks to all the suggestions and David (R@cerx) for the ten year supply of blades!

Nice! It's good to have some solid recommendations consolidated into one post.brad.b wrote:I can't believe I just found this thread. Been doing this since late spring and has become my main hobby. Spent much more time on shaving forums lately instead of DWC and watch forums.

Re: Shaving
The safety razor I've been using the last week is one I found at my folk's place (probably my step dad's and he wasn't using it ). It's a vintage one apparently, and from the information I can find seems to date to the mid-1960s. A Gillette Fat Boy. I don't have a pic of it handy but will post one later tonight if I remember. Looks almost dead on to this one (pulled from the web):

If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

Re: Shaving
Mine is no where near that good of condition. I tried to clean it up with some CLR (maybe a bad idea??) and it still has some cosmetic issues but functions perfectly. Something to be said for those old razors.

Re: Shaving
There's a bunch of Fatboys and Slim adjustables on ebay. Wish I'd never looked (or looked before I bought my latest new Merkur).

Terry...
Henry, I think mine might actually be a slim model. Still cool. There's several on the bay now and in almost new condition. Awesome.

Re: Shaving
I have a Fatboy and a Slim and both are awesome. Better than anything new IMO.
Fatboys were made from 58-61, Slims from 62-68. From 69-the 70s they made the Super Adjustables, which have the black handles. Also nice, and usually cheaper than their full nickel plated cousins.
From my experience, the Fatboy is cooler, but the Slim shaves my face better. But they are both staying.

Re: Shaving
Well, just ordered a 34C HD (man, my boobs got big!), some shaving cream, and a sampler pack of blades.
Re: Shaving
My wife got me the complete shaving kit with the Merkur classic last Christmas from Amazon. I switch between the Merkur, a Braun electric and Gillette Sensor just to mix it up.
