Amazon Firestick

Post by aikiman44 » Mon Jun 12, 2017 9:50 am

Great device. We've seen most of the movies with it.
My question is if there's a way to view premium cable shows and disconnect from all but basic cable?

I believe both HBO and Showtime have stand-alone apps for the Fire.

Even if 10-15 per month each, still cheaper than the beating from Comcast.

I'm considering the same.

Is YouTube legal? No downloading, only streaming...

We use HBO Now and it is fine. There are multiple legit options for getting full cable via the Firestick apps. The three I know of are Playstation Vue, Sling TV and Directv Now. I trialed them over the holidays and then payed for 1 month of Directv Now during March Madness. They have tiered cable packages just like with regular cable, but it is all internet based through apps, so no bullshit hidden fees. You can also start and stop your subscription at a moment's notice online. They all have trials. I recommend the trials as I have heard some do not work great in certain areas. I'm planning to just fire them up during bowl season and in March and then cancel for the rest of the year since ESPN is really the only part about Cable that I miss. Everything else I can get through HULU/Amazon/Netflix.

FYI, we were paying like $120/month for ATT Uverse cable, including the DVR, 3 HD TV upcharges, etc..... Now we have three firesticks with Hulu, HBO Now, Amazon Prime and Netflix subscriptions and are still paying only around $45-$50/month.

Just took my cable boxes to time warner/ spectrum this afternoon. After the price hike when spectrum took over, that was the last straw.

As of today we are Netflix and jail broken- kodi forestick only.

Saving $110 a month

BTW- I've only had the fire stick for 2 weeks. I've yet to figure it all out. It's pretty cool so far.

Digital antennas are awesome for that.
You get all the main free channels, so the only football you miss is the espn game.
I dislike going illegal or semi-legal*, so when I was back in NYC my setup was

Digital Antenna
+
HBO Now
+
Good enough internet
+
NBA League pass (for the 2 months of playoffs only)

Paid like $50 for the antenna, $15 per month for HBO and $40 for internet, plus the monthly for NBA league pass twice per year (I think the total was around $50)

*funny how homage watches like Ginault can be trashed but stealing cable is somehow ok for some

I'm not about stealing anything, but maybe the cable companies could see the writing on the wall.

You can pay $30/month for cable channels (ESPN) through the net using the Directv Now, Playstation Vue or Sling and get it on all of your TV's in HD. Far cheaper than traditional cable.

I'll call Comcast and see if I'm in a contract. If not I think SlingTV with HBO & Showtime will work.

Do any of those services give you Fox News Channel?

You really were thinking I was judging?
Me?
Italian guy?
When I was in my late teens (very little money, tons of spare time) I would illegally download more movies/shows in a year than I could now do in the rest of my lifetime (a of it was porn btw).

I have zero idea how you guys are watching cable, all I wanted to say is

- there are very cheap and legal ways to cut the cord today
- if anybody is getting for free a service you're supposed to be paying for that's called stealing, it's very simple.
I could 100% be wrong, I got the impression of illegality at the "oh they sometimes take that down" prior post. I apologize deeply if I misinterpreted

Interesting cost saving cable options.

My phone service is via cable, too - any options for that?

If I'm not mistaken you can get it with the HD antenna.
I was amazed when I discovered you can get many HD channels completely free in the States.
Here in Italy for crappy public service channels we pay $120 per year in taxes.
