Sirius XM drops out at intersections

Post by HapaHapa » Sat Jul 23, 2016 12:30 pm

My signal is going dead at a handful of intersections within a few miles of our home. Does rolling up the the light and picks up again maybe 50-100 ft past the light.

Anybody else experiencing this?

I read somewhere on the web that cell towers might be a cause.

Could it be a seasonal thing? Sun flares or something?

I have that happen occasionally here. I think it is due to tree cover blocking the antenna's visibility to the horizon. I know which streets are going to be tough and Murphy's Law dictates I'll be in those areas when Stern is in the middle of a good interview.

I used to work with XM. Word is when the SXM merger happened they were trying to consolidate signal broadcasting even though both are running on completely different frequencies and in a different way. Sirius satellite signal is stronger than XM, XM relies on ground repeaters for reception. Apparently they've been reducing the amount of XM ground repeaters which seems to be an issue with the older XM pre merger receivers and in turn strong electrical interference such as high powered lights and power stations can interrupt the signal if the noise interference level is higher than the incoming signal. Since it's digital you either have signal or you don't and since its not capable of static interference like standard radio the signal drops completely.

That's definitely true too. Just like GPS it requires a direct line of site to the satellite for a solid signal.
