This does get quoted a lot as one of those essential truth argument enders. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

The essential idea that by intercepting everything the world will be safe from terrorists (and kidnappers, according to the FBI) is fraught with holes.
I think Essential Liberties are the right to privacy and due process (i.e. warrants) before searches are made. The shift to electronic media has created an environment where the laws are not really keeping up with the capabilities of the technology. Add to that broad intercept powers by government agencies and cooperation by countries that allows one to state "We're not spying on our citizens" while viewing data on their citizens captured by allies ... voila you are where we are today.
Pretty serious boiling down of some rather complex issues of course

Good answer. I was mostly reacting out of a dislike of cliches. As far as "boiling down of some rather complex issues", Not so much. Yeah, there's lots of details but the issues themselves are pretty simple. Whats is "right", what is "wrong" are pretty simple questions that every one has to answer for themselves.jeckyll wrote:I see discussions of that a fair bit. Even in politics (Holy shit! He used the "P" word!) There are two basic schools in the world: "That which is not expressly permitted is prohibited" vs "That which is not expressly prohibited is permitted". The rest is arguing over details and whether or not "there oughta be a law".

Here's an interesting editorial on this written by Eugene Volokh. Tries to put the statement into context and examines what it most likely meant to Benjamin Franklin.Henryj wrote:This does get quoted a lot as one of those essential truth argument enders. I agree with Bjorn's assessment. I do not agree that that quote is a cliche. I see it as an essential truth in line with Natural Rights as outlined by John Locke.
Many will disagree, including the writer in Jeff's link.

just a heads, if any site you want to go to site that uses activeX or java there will be issues with W10 not letting it working. since they no longer use IE that created new compatibility issues

All I gathered was that BD's girlfriend's tits were on the web and we have yet to see them. Why hasn't this become a bigger issues? Fucking Prez messin' everything up.

Ok Bjorno. You know they have public libraries and internet cafes for you to do shady shit at...right?jeckyll wrote:lilhoody wrote:I made no mention of ordering a meal in a restaurant. As Eric suggests, you give up privacy for the convenience you seek and desire.jeckyll wrote:It's a fairly big step to suggest that access to peoples personal home computers, but the company that builds the OS, is normal.
Eric: You agree that storing information on your home computer is analogous with ordering a meal in a restaurant (which I believe if what Darin suggested).
You should read the details of the article which breaks down the agreement you have to accept for to get Windows 10.
If the government wants to read my web based nonsense and see my girlfriend's tits, in exchange for a safer world, they have my permission...expressed or not.
You didn't bother reading previous posts, which were about access on home systems, not online activity.
Most people never bother reading or trying to understand what they're giving up. I believe they should at least have an idea.
FWIW, there was a study that tried to investigate how much people were willing to give up their privacy for (based on free apps). I believe it came out to an average of around $2.50. Which is a pretty sad state of affairs IMO.
Carry on. Don't let me stand in the way of your convenience

Can they track this and tell me where she is at the moment?
Re: any one upgrade to windows 10
I just downloaded windows 10 to 3 of my Windows pro tablets....I must say that so far I am really enjoying it....Way more modern and useful interface, super clean, fast as hell so far and really liking the new Edge browser.....Seems far faster than IE ever was. Update was a cinch and took like 15-20 minutes going from 8.1 to 10. Plus I really like that it has Cortana built in from the windows phone OS. Pretty cool having that functionality on a pc. I also noticed that now you can click between Tablet mode and PC mode which is great for those like I that use a pro tablet as you main pc. Live tiles are still there in 10 but take a way backseat which is cool. They are still there if and when you need them, or not at all if you don't.
Re: any one upgrade to windows 10
I'm have been pleasantly surprised by windows 10. It's been great and the performance is much better. Of course I had to turn off everything that was opt out in privacy settings but other than that, well done MSFT.
any one upgrade to windows 10
I did it a few days ago and now I love it. It messed up my graphics at first (onboard, not card) and I was pissed as it wasn't resolving, no matter what I tried. After a couple days of messing around (and about 5 minutes before I was to downgrade my PC) I snagged the older graphics driver from Lenovo's website and all is great now.
I too did a Google search (FUbing) and turned off all the privacy settings (which are many and obnoxious) so I think I can visit the web with a modicum of security (said while LOL). I'm sure "Cortana" is fun, but she's not worth giving up what little web privacy we now have.
You have 30 days to downgrade so why not give it a shot?

Yeah, fuck cortana.
Re: any one upgrade to windows 10
This is a pretty helpful link to locking down Win10 with a little more privacy.

As noted in the linked article, there really isn't much sense in bitching about Win10 privacy if the next thing you do is fire up your Apple or Android smart phone. Much less privacy on those devices.

Re: any one upgrade to windows 10
gotta say now that I have been using win 10 for a week or two, i really think MSFT did a great job on this one......Really conducive to the way i use my tablets/PCs...Plus i love the "look" of it...I have only found a few weird "bugs" around a few apps that I am using as perhaps they are not fully compliant with 10 or something yet...
Re: any one upgrade to windows 10
don't you hate it when you are booting your windows machine and get a long pause.. then the dreaded DPC_Watchdog_Violation (BSOD) happens which no one knows what that is or means because it could be anything. the error is non descriptive and you would have no clue how to fix. it reboots fine afterwards like nothing ever happened.
So do you try to fix or just leave it as it's working again?
