Dive Watch Connection (DWC) support for

Post by USN_ED » Sun Dec 14, 2014 10:28 am

Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and below.

Microsoft no longer supports XP or IE8 (and older versions) any longer. I've noticed lately that many sites are not supporting these versions of IE either (WUS is an example) and some sites are posting warning notices that they will no longer support IE8 (and older versions) in the near future (youtube is an example). These sites want you to upgrade to a newer OS (i.e. Windows 8.1) and a newer IE browser (IE11).

As of now, DWC is working perfectly with the IE8 browser and I hope it continues to do so. All other sites that are powered by the
software version phpBB, as DWC is, are working well too.

I can afford a new laptop with Windows 8.1 and IE11 but fer craps sake, I'm 71 going on 72 and just don't feel like learning new systems/programs/etc..

I sure hope DWC and it's software company/host still keep supporting the older versions of Windows' OS and IE browsers.

I hope this made sense. I am sure as hell not a techie when it comes to this stuff.

i recently had to upgrade to Windows 8.1 and was dreading it. But I had no choice as the old computer crashed hard. I ended up with a ASUS desktop and the conversion has been pretty painless. ASUS supplies a "shell" to emulate a Windows 7 type of interface. I really like it.

You can always use Chrome as well. Free download and likely more secure.

Now that you mentioned it, support will stop shortly. :-)

You're fine-but yeah Chrome (or a Chromebook) is the way to go for surfing IMO.

Yup. Install Chrome and use that instead of outdated and unsupported IE. Add the 'noscript' and 'adblock+" extensions to improve your online security.

Learning a new browser is really a small thing compared to a whole new operating system.

Good luck :)

I've tried Chrome and it works well to a point but it seems that that browser has problems displaying their tool bars consistently, etc.. Firefox isn't that great either. Anyway, I'd like to stick to IE.

Thanks for your suggestion Steve.

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm just an old guy resistant to unnecessary change. I suppose I'll have to change over eventually but hope DWC resists the change for awhile too.

I love chrome, I more love Google collecting the data around every site I visit, every query I make and selling that data. Now everyone will know I enjoy midget boxing.

Ed chrome is one of the easiest and simplest browsers to use hands down. Also id doesn't require constant updates and add on's like Explorer does.

If you want to keep your existing computer and go to a free operating system you can look online and read about ubuntu and use it. It does take a little bit to get use to it but there are a ton of info on youtube and online. It is actually pretty simple once you get use to it.

If you have any questions send me a pm and I will help you out as much as possible.

Ed,
Shoot me your address in a pm, I will send you a live CD, and you can try out fedora without making any changes to your computer.

Or holler at Terry :)

Make sure that the CD isn't part of Terry's "personal collection".

I have downloaded Chrome and am experimenting with it now. Kind of confusing but it looks like it may work out. I'm going to try to post a picture with it now. It is a picture of some of the Seiko watches I have so, if something else shows up, I'll keep trying.

Image

OH Lordy, Lordy, - I'll have to give it another go. You don't suppose Terry knows those gals do you?

Giving the Seiko watch picture another try.

Image

Chris - That's a very generous offer and if this picture doesn't com out right and if I can't get the hang of Chrome, I'll shoot you a PM.

EDIT: It looks like I'm getting the picture posting with Chrome down ok. Sorry if anyone has permanent eye damage from that first pic. I'll keep experimenting with Chrome to see how it goes. Thanks to everyone for their encouragement

Even when IE is supported, it still has a boatload of problems. Chrome or Firefox will serve you much better.
