I wonder how much it'll end up costing, net, between picking up the new one and flipping the 4S.

Generally, Apple products have retained their value pretty well, so upgrading to the next big thing (after the initial large investment to get into the damn things in the first place) isn't too painful.

Speaking of selling the I4, so I do a reset to factory settings (once the I5 is set up), but since its an ATT i4, that's the only carrier a buyer could use it for right?

Reset it to factory settings. The AT&T iPhone can be used on a GSM network, so it's not just limited to AT&T.

Any of you guys know how a carrier switch will work with the preorder? Will I need to go to the store to do it?

Good question. You can switch right on the Verizon website I believe, but I don't know how to do it with the pre-order.

Contract aside, you should be cash flow positive after buying new and selling old. GSM phones sell for more historically than their CDMA counterpart as it has a bigger market.

Not sure either but I also want to switch from AT&T to Verizon. My big hang up is I want to keep my number so I'm afraid of the whole porting process without going into the store. Looks like its going to be a line for me if I decide to buy.

I'm hoping to get between $300 and $350 when I sell mine. I was shocked last year when I sold my 3 year old beat up 3G for $150!!

So preorder Friday....when does it ship? Does it ship on the 21st, does it arrive on the 21st, or do I get it before?

Never done a preorder, so just trying to set proper expectations. Thanks.

As much as I want to, I just don't see that switching to Verizon is worthwhile for me. Apart from supposed better call quality and coverage (which has never been a problem for me on AT&T), I'll save $25 a month on a comparable (grandfathered) plan by sticking with AT&T. The 4G LTE coverage of AT&T is spotty where I am, but I rarely surf off WiFi anyway.

AT&T is not even a consideration in New York City and its suburbs. An iPhone 5 may as well be an ipod touch.

Usually you get it on the release day, so it should arrive via fedex on the 21st.

I hope you guys that buy the 5 will do a review. I'm on the fence- my 4 works fine but I want the 4G LTE...I will be very interested to see what you guys think...

if I switch to Verizon from At&t, I am going to the store. Heard too many issues when it came to moving over tunes, apps, phone #'s etc...

Nope, pre-order and port your number. Verizon will help you with all the steps, just give them a call.

Yep.
Turn by turn voice directions. Yes please.
Unreal that it takes entirely new phone for you to get that.

they're not offering that on the 4S with IOS6? I missed that.
everything I've read so far shows that it's not only on the iPhone5. it's just dependent on OS version

although I'll still use TomTom since the maps are all stored on the phone whenever I'm out of the country.

Yeah, its a free app. Been using it on my iphone for a year. Used it today as a matter of fact, cause I got lost. LOL.

Pay more to get less + a pretty UI. Never understood the Apple thing.

I was an Apple hater for years and made fun of the fanboys..... until I thought "what the hell" and picked one up two years ago...... and now have my second Apple phone and an Ipad 2. Sure, on paper some of the Android phones look good feature for feature. The beauty with Apple is the details, cohesive, intuitive design and interface. Everything (hardware, software, accessories) is fully integrated and elegantly put together. It is the intangibles.... Hard to explain. If you transported an iPhone 1 user from 2007 to the present day, they could pick up an iPhone 5 and immediately recognize it and intuitively use most of the features.

Kind of like how a G-Shock or Helson can be viewed on paper as superior to a Sub when you compare stats, but most would take the Rolex............ maybe that analogy is a stretch.

Dnslater, I agree. I had BB for years, then androids , then iPhone.
Would never go to anything else. It's not being a fan boy for me, everyone likes what they like but like you said the iPhone is intuitive, easy to use and packed with features. Android has a lot of fancy screens and tons of different settings, but they don't do anything more really than the iPhone, they just load it up with stuff to make it appear that way.
