Well the virus really sucks, but as users we have to be careful about programs out there. The Mac base is growing and so it is going to be targeted more and more in the future.

definitely true that is why I posted this so that Mac users stay current and not to rely on the old info that Mac's don't get viruses.userfriendly wrote:Well the virus really sucks, but as users we have to be careful about programs out there. The bottom line with this kind of stuff has always been don't go around downloading random programs without doing a little due diligence. Download your apps from a trusted source. There are tons of new Mac users who are extremely clueless, so I'm sure we will see more of this stuff down the road.

It is fair to point out that this was not a virus and that there are still no documented cases of a virus ever having infected OSX. this was a trojan and it relied on human stupidity to download it and install it. It exploited a feature of the mac aplication folder settings which allowed users to automatically depackage and run software placed in it. the command allowing this is in Safari. if you disable it, the package might get downloaded, but it won't install or run anything. instead it will stay in your download folder until you delete it. of course you could easily avoid this nonsense had you simply used firefox or Chrome, which don't allow for the automatic unpacking.
Mac OS is not any more secure than windows. In fact, in many ways it is far less secure. What it does is it relies on Unix software architechture and a system that by default does not make users administrators (like Microsoft used to love to do). Not allowing anything to auto install and auto run without specific admin privileges goes a long way toward keeping malware off your machine. Linux does the same thing but it is truly more secure.
