Does this gshock exist? Please help me find one...

Post by sierra11b » Mon Aug 15, 2016 10:11 pm

I recently got a new gig moving me from the kitchen after many years to food auditor for a big scientific company.

In a nutshell, I conduct about 2-6 audits a day at food service establishments ranging from 1.25hrs to 4hrs daily.

I realized that wearing a watch like the aerospace just isn't feasible or safe even though it's what I wanted. :banghead: I conduct a number of handwashing demos at each location taking off my watch and placing it in my pocket. Simply un-doing the clasp and letting it go further down the arm doesn't work well. Eventually, all those trips to the pocket is going to wear the watch finish down more than I'd like over the next years.

I've also noticed that doing this with my x33 it almost fell out of my pocket a couple times (and no, that has nothing to do with my omega bracelet thread which happened during off hours). Bottom line is there's too many distractions, me getting on my hands and knees numerous times with a flashlight... If I forget to put the watch back on it's doomed to come crashing out of my pockets some day.

So because I work for a third party company we're alloted time for each locatin for cost purpose.

My g-shock 7500 only counts down from 60 minutes but the encrusted hard-rubber case is the way to go here. The chrono helps but I forget to look down and sometimes too much time has elapsed.

I need a gshock that can count down from a higher amount (say 5hrs min), a chrono, and a decently audible alarm to alert .

Any ideas?

Congrats on new position.

Get a INOX and use your smartphone to count down. [SKULL]

I must admit it feels wrong wearing a non analog watch.

Don't get me wrong! I love my ghock as a beater, but I feel like I'm cheating myself wearing it 50 hours a week.

Gotta figure out a way to secure an aerospace during hand washing demos.

Congrats.

Don't be worried about the aerospace. It'll be fine. Put it on a NATO.

I have to wash my hands a lot at work- NATO kinda sucks when it's wet and on your wrist all day.
Vintage ISO is the way To go for thinner or light weight 20mm lug watches.

Yeah but I gotta take it off constantly for handwashing demos. One of these days I'll leave it on the counter and walk out.

Congrats on the new job! I wear a G for work a lot. I usually carry another watch in my work bag and when I'm not actually working strap the G to my bag and wear the other watch.

You can't wear a watch for handwashing? What about the other guys who are washing their hands? Is taking off the watch part of the procedure?

That's pretty interesting, but then again, I can't say I know anything about your line of work.

Well, you could just do this. It seems to solve the problem while creating another one (looking ridiculous)

So far I can't think of any chain I audit that would want me to mark that as a deduction, but it would definitely be a coachable moment in the comment section. Technically, you're only allowed a plain wedding band for jewelry in the kitchen meaning a watch is a no go. Can get caked with potentially hazardous foods over time.

I always wore one and never had that problem. If I was working with something like flour which can cake a bezel, or potentially hazardous food, I'd keep it in my office, or knife bag when I was younger.

But now that I'm that guy it makes it difficult.

One thing I've always noticed about celebrity chefs is a lot of them have nice watches. Bourdain, Brown, Flay, Achatz, etc.

Of course. I wore nice watches, too. In fact, I scored my 116710 ceramic and crystal against the edge of a hotel pan moving quickly through my kitchen once.

They're easy to maintain, but when you're the equivalent of the IRS entering a facility you gotta lead by example and wash completey up the wrist with 100f water for 20 seconds. I'm not a county inspector.... I'm a third party contracted by big food companies who want to be sure the new guy making minimum wage isn't about to cost them their jobs and kill people in the process with another chipotle. In a sense we're held to higher standard than county because we go way above looking for simple restaurant closures. We prevent foodborne liability.

Not saying I won't wear a watch, but a solid beater that performs would be ideal here. Maybe the momentum format 4?
