Natural rubber straps.....where is the vanilla smell from

Post by tattoo chef » Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:07 pm

So, saw this elsewhere today, someone saying he doesnt like the smell of the vanilla natural rubber straps, said it makes him gag....to each their own. I personally really love them.
But with that being said, I did some searching around today for about an hour on the net, trying to read as much about rubber , how its made , natural rubber, synthetic rubber, silicone rubber, etc, and cant find one thing about the vanilla for the straps.
I also might just be an idiot and didnt search hard enough...

But, is the vanilla smell, just a byproduct of the natural rubber, or does natural rubber smell really bad when being produced that they put in the vanilla during the manufacturing process so it has a pleasant odor.
Anyone have the answer or maybe a link to something where I can find the answer would be appreciated.

4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde

Image

Organic Vanillin molecule. Its used in the rubber processes to mask the odor of rubber. Also done in the tire industry and others including the straps we all smell.

Well there we go....THANK YOU.
For the life of me, I couldnt find that info.
Now, I know.
I do like the smell myself, some straps can have a little more than others, but it is pleasant to me at least, and Im sure its better than smelling the rubber without it, because if they have to add vanilla to it, Im sure it doesnt smell pleasant with out it.
Thank you again.

Can' t locate/ quote the source. But I' ve read that the rubber straps that are of Italian manufacture have the vanilla scent, which is common knowledge. But those from other countries do not necessarily have it. Is this accurate?

I'd have to agree.

My Isofranes came in and were just too strong of a vanilla fragrance. Its nauseating.
But over time they do subside and disappear eventually.

But my Marathons were weak so they were much less offensive and tolerable right away.

Really? We must have opposite noses, because it's the EXACT opposite example that was in my head. Marathon rubber was way too over the top for me, but the ISOfrane wasn't very noticeable at all.

Strange!

My Isofrane is strooong. Very overpowering out of the box. It is getting better over time though.

Agree, the ISOfrane vanilla smell diminishes over time.

The smell of my ISO has faded over time as well. It's much more subtle now, which I appreciate.

My first Isofrane, a 24mm had a very intense vanilla odor when new. It is now much more subtle. The newer 22mm models didn't smell nearly as much.
