Leather strap advice

Post by suddha » Tue Dec 21, 2010 12:45 pm

I've always been a rubber or bracelet guy and that usually has meant going with the stock options from the brands. But I'd love to pick up a nice leather strap to wear on one or more of my current collection. But the choices are a bit daunting so I'm hoping some of you leather lovers ( :stir: ) can give me a shortcut to known entities and ideas.

The one leather strap that I wore and really liked was the thick 24mm olive drab on that Huguenin pilot's watch I was wearing for a while. The color was versatile, not being black or brown and though it was thick, it was very comfortable.

I'm thinking a 20mm would fit both my Submariner and my Speedy Pro. Needs to be fairly long and I'm not too fond of a lot of decoration or design stitching. Anybody got any ideas? Photos and links are appreciated... Thanks in advance!

Others have a wider range of experience than I do, but I liked what our very own Joseph (Diaboliq) did for me. He doesn't charge nearly enough either. Patience is required, but he is really awesome to work with IMHO.

Greg Stevens made me a custom strap on my Longines LLD...
either a 22 or a 20MM...

This is a black horween (waterproof) but he has a nice Crazy Horse
and or Olive Green (Olivo)...

The guys here obviously do great work. I consider them more "custom" strap makers. Another guy who comes very highly recommended among the Panerai crowd is Micah at Vintager Straps. Check out the photo gallery of past projects and read his guarantee .... it's unbelievable.

Though most strap makers will do virtually anything you ask, On the custom straps check out:

Peter Gunny. He mixes and matches a lot and I have seen a lot of his straps in 20, 21 and 22mm. He is taking leather from the Deep Red on the DSSD and making it into a stitch less 2010 Serie style for me (though in 24mm)

http://gunnystraps.blogspot.com/

Jeanna at Stone Creek has made a lot of straps in smaller lug widths. Here are some of hers

http://stonecreekstraps.com/page12.php? ... category=3

I have also seen our very own (Joseph) Diaboliq and a few straps he made for a couple of our members in 20mm that came out real nice.

As mentioned Micah is awesome to work with.

Rob Montana is as well.

For pre-made straps. Jae swears by Peter at watchacc

I have have gotten good service from Freda Watch straps on Hirsch and Hadley Roma models

I will try and get back to this thread with some of my pictures or other pictures I have accumulated.

It's true. The strap I got from him feels far better than the OEM Omega or IWC straps I had.

Lots of great options. If you want to do custom, I second (third) recommendations on Rob Montana and Micah. Awesome quality, and great guys.

I get most of my straps made by Richard at Toshi straps in London. Check out his gallery for some great ideas(my Kobold is in there). Micah and Rob Montana are both fantastic as well.

Most surprising, and best deal I ever got on a strap:

Once upon a time, Christopher Ward was having a big sale on straps. I picked up a black Louisiana gator plus SS butterfly deployant for £13 and another brown gator with gold [plated] butterfly for £21. The straps were excellent quality. Of course those list for £165 ($255) now, but I guess the point is that I once bought some straps from ChristopherWard.com, and the quality was surprisingly good (back in 2009). They also carry a few leathers.
