Bleaching a Shiznit - experiment
Bleaching a Shiznit - experiment
So after receiving Terry's latest Shiznit colors, I decided that they were too dark for my preference. I really wanted a true Khaki colored strap and the Crisp Khaki is much darker. The "before" photo below shows it as a dark tan, but that was taken outside and it reads like a dark brown indoors.
As they arrived - again they look much darker indoors:
I thought I would have a go at bleaching the strap to see if they would lighten. I soaked them in a bleach/water mixture for an hour with no change. After a little internet work I found out that Nylon isn't impacted by bleach unless heat is applied, so I boiled the bleach water. Within minutes they began to lighten. Once they lightened an acceptable amount I threw them in the laundry to rinse the bleach. They continued to lighten a bit in the laundry, and the Crisp Khaki came out exactly as I wanted, while the jungle Green did weird things and came out a deep gold colors with a hint of orange.
Here are the results.

Cool! I might try that for fun!

Cool! Does the nylon hold up after that much exposure to bleach?
Re: Bleaching a Shiznit - experiment
Doesn't look any different. Weave is still shimmery and tight with no fraying, etc... Even if there is a slight loss of strength, Shiznit straps are pretty beefy and I would be surprised if there were issues.gonzomantis wrote: ↑Sun Oct 28, 2018 2:04 pmCool! If you do, go easy on the bleach. I was pretty heavy handed and the transformation happened quickly. You can probably control it more with less bleach in the solution. Have some cold water and tongs ready and transfer it as soon as you get it where you want it.

The khaki looks great. I've got to say, I like the original Crisp Khaki color, but I'd also love a true khaki like this as well. Maybe I need to buy a second one and bleach it.
