Conditioning leather straps?

Post by abuemily » Sat Feb 18, 2017 10:08 am

I've been looking at a couple of my leather straps and asking myself if I should put some type of leather treatment on them, if it will help them last a bit longer. I'm fond of using Mink Oil on my boots--anyone ever tried this, or use anything similar on their straps?

Don't use mink oil. It can go rancid and you don't want that on your wrist.
Micah includes a small tin of something with his Mauser straps. I'd send him an email and ask what it is. It works great.

I use small amounts of saddle soap, carefully working it into the leather.

I've used this on my ToxicRoo, mostly because it was at hand. Works perfectly, doesn't darken the leather much, if at all.

I would agree with Chris. Mink oil is only for the boots.

I believe it's Dr. Jackson's Hide Rejuvenator.

I have put a little obenaufs on a scratchy leather NATO, and I think on Art's Schwartz (haha that sounds bad), but haven't put much thought to this. Interested in opinions.

I use Bickmore Bick 4 leather conditioner. It is lanolin based (I believe) so nothing chemical or nasty. The skin on the inside of the wrist just seems to me to be more sensitive, so I'd be careful to use only natural products.

Downside to Bickmore Bick 4 is it can leave the leather a bit shinny. This goes away, but you may want to test it on something first before using it on a nice strap.

Hand lotion works fine to add moister, but it doesn't clean.

This thread did not go at all in the direction I thought it would. How disappointing ...

The Dr. J's Hide Rejuvenator is really good for conditioning the leather. I use it. I actually prefer Obenauf's LP (the same stuff I put on my boots), as it both conditions and waterproofs the leather. Both of these will darken the leather, so be prepared for that.

In Texas, we use Bick 4 on all types of leather and exotic skins.

Lexol removes color sometimes. Venetian is the best in my experience.

In the interest of one stop shopping, is there any chance you can start to carry that? I want to get more leathers, but after a bad experience with a $250 Breitling leather I'm very hesitant to buy more, despite how much I love the look.
