Real sailcloth strap?

Post by logan2z » Sat Mar 26, 2016 1:41 pm

I posted several months ago about recommendations for a real sailcloth strap. Someone recommended the Rios Just which I bought but found a bit too thick/stiff for my tastes (cue the usual jokes here :) ). Any other recommendations for a real sailcloth strap? One option is the strap sold by Blancpain but I assume there must be others that I'm overlooking. Real sailcloth seems to be difficult to find.

Sure. Bradystraps. $35 and very high quality and good blk/contrasting stitch options.

I believe the Brady Straps straps are leather with a sailcloth pattern applied on them. From the site, the straps are described as:
Sailcloth pattern embossed genuine leather
I like the straps a lot, but they are not actual sailcloth. We can obviously hear from the horse's mouth on the issue.

That's my understanding as well and pretty clear from the description you quoted.

Is sail cloth something that can easily purchased? Could someone buy scrap material and send it to one of our strap artisans as a special order?

There are a number of types of sailcloth. Prices seem to range in the $10-20/yard area. And there are many many colors available.

Seems like there is a business opportunity here

Sailcloth is just a fancy term for nylon webbing. It's paper thin and will need to be filled with something to make it padded so it's thick enough to be essentially like BP Sailcloth strap. I don't see any benefit of real nylon sailcloth over a nylon 2-piece NATO. Except it would look more like a regular watch strap.

I personally can't stand BP Sailcloth straps I have, so what do I know :)

PS there are many companies including invicta, moranello and others that make nylon canvas looking straps. Cordura is what some of them call it. Varying from thin nylon like Sailcloth to thicker nylon like something your ballistic nylon bags are of. Heck my Alpinas came with those straps. Not my cuppa

Maybe just the blue BP sailcloth is stiff. The ttal and green bathys is really soft/comfortable \_(ツ)_/¯

I was ready to throw away my BPFF sailcloth set before I even wore it, yet Wu convinced me to try it and now I don't want anything else. The Aqua Lung sail cloth, with their diver's buckle & extension, is great.

Glad you guys like them. Get em on eBay. Nylon/sailcloth/Cordura straps are cheap on ebay and other places.
